Confusing pathology results

I was diagnosed in Oct with encapuslated papillary carcinoma treatment plan lumpectomy and radiotherapy.  However curveball the histopathology raised an anomaly and after a very long wait. ( another story) I got the results sent to me. I appear to have a rare diagnosis main tumour was indeed papillary carcinoma non invasive insitu & DCIS however adjacent cells show invasive cancer.

I have yet to speak to my consultant as I had the report sent to keep direct. As the initial diagnosis was non invasive I realise they will now need to check my lymph nodes to check for cancer cells.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

  • Hello Underwatergirl. It can be quite common for an initial diagnosis to change following surgery. I was initially diagnosed with invasive cancer but following a lumpectomy the pathology report identified some DCIS cells adjacent to the invasive tumour, which had not been picked up by earlier biopsies/scans. DCIS can change to invasive cancer and I understand that it's not that unusual for these two types of cells to be found together. My initial treatment plan was a lumpectomy & sentinel lymph node biopsy followed by radiotherapy but as cancer was  found in one lymph node and not all margins were clear this changed to 6 months of chemo after the lumpectomy, followed by a full lymph node axillary clearance and further re-excision. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual and things like the size and grade of the cancer, as well as the type, will all be taken into account when finalising a treatment plan for you. Unfortunately, as many on here will know, curveballs can be part and parcel of a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment plans can frequently change. I hope that now that the histology report is back your medical team/ MDT will be considering how best to treat you and will keep you informed of any changes without you having further lengthy waits. Have you been given a date to discuss the results with your consultant?

  • Thank you LalaLou that's very helpful. I was aware at my last appointment to expect possibility of further treatment for lymph if invasive. Until then  I naively thought the diagnosis just that. It was all going so well up till then.

Unfortunately I  had to go through PALS to get my results, which were long overdue and no action by my medical team to chase. I only got them sent Friday so hope that this will spur them into action!
