I don't know what to do and am having difficulty getting advice.
I had my two doses of the Astra Zeneca Covid vaccine in January and April 2021 before I had my breast surgery operation, chemo and radiotherapy during April to October 2021.
I was invited for a booster Covid jab but was told it would be either Phizer or Moderna I did not want to mix the vaccines as I felt there was not enough data about adverse reactions for people with compromised immune systems. I asked both my GP and Oncologist but they were unwilling to give definitive advice about this.
I have recently received a text and letter from the NHS advising me to have a third dose of the primary vaccine which is the Astra Zeneca and that I should contact my GP to book this. My GP says they are not offering the Astra Zeneca vaccine and that should book a booster of the Phizer or Moderna which is not what I want to do.
I rang 119 and they advised I could book an appt via their service but they wouldn't know what vaccine I would be given at the local centre.
Obviously worrying times with this new Covid variant. I've been shielding during my treatment wearing a mask and keeping socially distanced when I have to go out.
My latest cancer treatment was cancelled until the New Year because my vitamin D levels were so low.
I would love to hear what other cancer patients have done about the booster and what advice or reassurances you have been given about the booster or third dose
Thank you
Hi BronteMaggs my first two vacs were AZ and my booster was due Beginning Nov I received texts one via local health saying go for booster second from NHS saying go for third primary ( this was before any announcement re 4th jab for CEV .
I emailed seeking clarification from nhs . The reply I received explained dosage is the same but those of us clinically extremely vulnerable would be offered fourth jab as their booster .
Iwas given Pfizer as 3rd primary and suffered no Ill effects but we are all different .
Prior to this I had heard ,can’t remember where ,that the experts believed that the mix of vacs could be beneficial . You can read my story on my profile but my chemo finished Dec2019 then Herceptin til Jan 2021 now on bisphosonate infusions til next year . I personally do not want to risk coping with covid without some protection and have never worried about flu jab so felt quite confident about jabs .
Take care
I had AZ in March and may then a 3rd vaccination with pfizer in November. I'm doing chemo.at the minute and would take whatever they offered to me
I had AZ due first two thne Pfizer for third. I had severe joint pain after 2nd jab. Resolved after third
I asked specifically about the mix. Had two AZ vaccinations. Was expecting a Pfizer booster. Discussed with Nurse. Given Moderna booster which apparently is just a half dose, she said because the gov can save money that way. Safe and no ill effects other than booking an appt but herded around like sick cattle for an hour, as running over an hour late and people in wheelchairs unable to get down a ramp as full of people made to queue outside in the cold on same ramp. I thought the place was so rammed and badly organised it was probably a good place to catch Covid19
The link below explains more:
I had AZ for first 2 and Pfizer for third. I asked about why AZ is not being offered as a third or booster and was told it’s to do with the different ways in which the vaccines provoke a response within the immune system. She was excellent on explaining it but I don’t have the knowledge to reproduce that answer here!! but the long and the short is the Pfizer and moderna ones work in such a way that they can provoke a better initial response with one single dose. Hopefully somebody medical can respond and give a better answer but here is a news article that explains it a bit
It’s to do with the mRNA technology it utilises.
Indeed. The Nurse who jabbed me mentionned MRNA as well, but I can't remember what was said, other than it seemed a good reason to accept the vaccination offered. A very good article.
Thank you, I hope your Chemo treatment is going well? I had quite a bad time with with mine but feeling a lot better than I was
