Anyone else feeling huge discomfort with a picc line? I just cant get comfy with it and its causing sleepless nights. I had my 1st session of chemo on friday nausea has been horrendous and its seems the anti sickness tablets were making me worse giving me vertigo so I've stopped them. I'm still quite lightheaded and tired which I'm guessing is the normal? When will I get some relief from symptoms please I just cant even look after my 2 children at the moment and it's really getting to me.

  • I’m sorry, it is incredibly hard. It does take a few weeks to get used to the picc line but for me I did get used to it after a couple of weeks. Talk to your team about changing your antisickness meds and I found taking omeprazole twice a day (double dose) helped with the nausea a lot. Yes lightheaded and tired was normal for me. It’s incredibly hard to keep it all together and look after the kids too, try not to be hard on yourself, just do what you can and try and get some play dates and any help with the kids that you can to give you space to recover so when you are with them you have something to give them x hope you start to feel better soon x

  • Hi, sorry to hear you've having such a tough time. I agree with Anna, ask about trying some different anti sickness meds. I tried 3 lots before I got ones that worked for me. Hope you have some good support around you to help. We all react differently but hopefully this passes within a few days x

  • Hi

I had my PICC line removed after three weeks. It was causing me a great deal of discomfort, I couldn't even stretch my arm fully and my whole arm was very tender and sore inside. It hurt so much to put my arm through a sleeve.

I mentioned it to one of the nurses when I was having it flushed. She thought my arm looked swollen (I personally didn't) but she said it should have settled by that point. She sent me to have an ultrasound on it. They can cause blood clots so she was worried about that. The sonographer told me that part of the PICC line was sat in a very, very narrow vein and was causing blood flow to be reduced in that part of my arm. There was no clot at that point but they couldn't guarantee it 100% because he couldn't scan the  part of my arm where the dressing was.

I was then sent to the Emergency Ambulatory dept and the decision was taken to remove it. I then had a second scan the following day to double check. No clot. My next chemo was administered via cannula

My arm is still sore even now. I have 9 chemos left so not sure what's going to happen, I presume I'll just have a cannula until they tell me otherwise.

If yours has been in for longer than 2-3 weeks Id get it looked at.

I hope you start to feel better soon. I've had 3 ECs and I stay light headed and tired for 7-8 days after each one.

    Lou x

He was hesitant using the vein he did as he said it was narrow but I couldnt have it in my other arm due to surgery. I've only had it in since last tues but even putting my arm in my coat sleeve hurts. I be more happy without it that's for sure. X

Thankyou I'm contacting them today to get it changed I'll mention the omeprazole. Since not taking it I feel alot better but my stomach is very delicate x

  • I would see what's it like but by week 3 if it doesn't settle you need to mention it to them. I have a couple of friends who say they don't even know that they've got a PICCl line in , it's become part of them .

Mine never felt like that. I was aware of it all the time. I even stopped using that arm to reach for things as it was so painful.

Hope you get it sorted x
