Hi all, not been on for a while I’m here supporting my mum who was diagnosed with breast cancer in February. She had a mastectomy which upon looking at sentinel nodes showed 4/6 were positive. So proceeded to chemo followed by auxiliary node clearance. Pathology results showed some cancer cells in 1/4 nodes removed. This was bit of a shock as had hoped chemo would have cleared everything. Now proceeding to radiotherapy as planned. My question is ..is this normal/common. Should I still remain worried about whether chemo has done it’s job? Surgeon said it’s all gone now but with no further scans is this because they were clear before so no reason to think it’s there now and maybe the 1 with cells would have been worse before. I guess I shouldn’t expect full clearance as those who have chemo before surgery it works to shrink and reduce cancer cells. Looking for any reassurance from others who have had similar experience x
Are you sure it was active cancer cells that they found? I had chemo prior to surgery and they told me they can tell if there were ever cancer cells in the lymph nodes, even if the chemo had killed them.
Also, you don't always get a complete pathological response (all cancer cells killed) from chemo. I got a partial response but enough to proceed with lumpectomy.
BeatthebreastThank you for replying. I’m assuming they were active as he said we found cancer cells in one of the nodes removed so glad we removed them all so it’s gone now. But definitely need radiotherapy which is what was planned anyway. Thank you once again hope you’re doing well on your journey x
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, good luck with the radiotherapy. I'm doing great thanks, I finished rads at the end of April.
