Hi Everyonne, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer (in my 30s)...I have since had a mastectomy and reconstruction and was given the good news that all the cancer was out with no cancer in the nodes phew! I've now met with the oncologist who explained that any futher treatment they do is to prevent recurrence. They explained that it's my decision whether to have chemotherapy or not (which is quite intense) but to help make the decision I could have the Oncotype DX Test but I need to have this done privately. I've already called a couple of clinics in London where I'm based for more information (Royal Marsden/The London Clinic). Does anyone have any experience of doing this privately and know of any other clinics? It seems that costs vary at least for the oncology appointment so I'm doing my research! Thanks for your help!

  • Hi Goose good to hear you are doing well after your surgery and now cancer free what a relief.

I dont know much about oncotype but by answering you’ll get bumped up to the top of the queue again and hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will see your post.

I was to have the oncotype test because initially my cancer was found to be slightly oestrogen positive but after surgery it was then found to be negative so chemo was strongly recommended for me regardless.   I am triple negative.  Not sure but I think Er positive and HER2 positive might qualify for a free test so presume yours is neither of these?

I can’t really help with places to try but suggest you could try Nottingham which has a renowned cancer centre.
I have seen posts on here which mention costs between 2k and 3k. If you search oncotype on here it might mention where the test was carried out.

There is also an NHS Predict test you can do online. Haven’t done it myself but I understand that gives you your chances of recurrence if you type in details like type and size of cancer, your age etc.

Hope this helps a bit x

  • Hi Goose, sorry not to be much help but we were given the oncotype test on the NHS. Do you know what stage you were at? Someone please correct me if i'm wrong but I thought stages 1 -2 were covered by them as long as no node involvement.  It is really quite expensive so I might be tempted to ask the oncologist why you are being advised to go private?

  • Yes there is a category you can fall into to have the test done otherwise itself no benefit to you treatment wise. I fell into it as I'm gradev3 ductal carcinoma estrogen positive no node involvement. I was told that the NHS provide this test free. Why are they asking you to pay for it, or are you have you gone private..its at least £3000 for test..Good luck..xx

Hi everyone thank you for your replies! So I'm doing everything on the NHS but this one test they said I needed to do privately, but I'm not entirely sure why. Perhaps the oncologist did explain in the meeting but there was a lot of information to take in. I'm going to query it again though! Hopefully I can sort this out soon! Thanks for your help x

  • Yes I'd query it, all my treatment is through NHS,, the surgeon told me he was on the fence weather to give me chemo or not and that's why I'm getting test done,it will help oncologist to make final decision ,he also said that if it comes back borderline then it's my decision and advice from oncologist to have chemo or not I just don't understandwhy he's asking you to pay for it privately..Good luck

  • Morning. I had the oncotype test via NHS. But it was as part of a clinical trial concerning women who had cancer in 1 to 3 lymph nodes. I am at Guys and St Thomas in London. I think the trial was nationwide tho'. It wasn't explained it was a trial until my first oncology appt. Maybe see if there is a trial you can join. A friend in Oz had to pay £500 for hers.

  • If you are in England it’s offered free on the NHS if it’s DCIS with no node involvement. I also think the same offered if in situ and HER 2, I’ve had to pay for mine although set up by my oncologist via nhs but I had one node involved. It was the best money I ever spent as like u I was on the fence for chemo. I’d go back ask why private as u know people who have it done via the hospital they are at via nhs.
