AGE 63
HI Age63
I wonder if it's worth giving them a call and letting them know your concerns about a later operation due to your diabetes? They may not have noticed that and it is obviously very important.
It is a worrying time at the start of your treatment and we all get that. Like you say you just want it over and done with. I had IDC grade 2 and DCIS of grade 3 and it was silly things that 'sent me over the edge', so don't worry about how you are reacting, it's all perfectly normal. Once you're through it all, I promise it does get easier. I was diagnosed 4 1/2 years ago and apart from taking a daily tablet, I all but forget about having had cancer for the most part. The only time I get a bit stressed about it is when I'm due my annual mammogram.
Good luck with your operation.
Kindest wishes, Lesley
Hi Age 63,I don,t know anything about Diabetes, but am sure they know how to handle you on the day,why not give the breast care nurse a ring to express your concern, she will probably be able to answer any question you have,as she will have your notes on file, there so friendly and efficient, super helpful and understanding,am sure if you call you will feel better for getting questions answered re your condition,Don,t worry re. Opp,having gone through it in Aug.coming out the other end thinking why did I worry, but we do.My first opp date was also cancelled, had to wait another week.
Thank you for your kind words i have spoken to them about my diabetes but they say there is nothing they can do about Changing my time i don't think my husband helps as all he says is as mine is only a little opp that there might be people that needs bigger opp that day
Hi - If I were you I wouldn't stress too much about the time. It's the Surgeons who decide the Operating list order, so not anything you can control. Try to relax and just get there whenever they ask you to and take something to occupy you if a long wait. I just sat and watched and listened - found it nerve wrackingly interesting, especially when someone failed to turn up - much shouting and gnashing of teeth by the Surgeon.
When surgery is later in the day and there is absolute certainty that it will not be in the morning, there may be an option to extend the deadlines both for food and for water. In the hospital where I am, the rule is up to midnight for food and 6am for water if your surgery is in the morning, and up to 4:30am for food and 10:30am for water if they know you are going in the afternoon. It may be worth checking, so that the time of day does not affect the length of time you are without food.
If they still insist on the same deadlines as for morning surgery, mention the diabetes to the nurses when you arrive on the day of the surgery, and again to the aneasthetist when you see them prior to surgery.
Clerical staff often do not understand the significance of certain medical issues, but the medical team will get it.
Hi Age 63 , I'm Jayne I'm 63 too just had a bilateral mastectomy nodes clearance and started chemotherapy! You sound just like me before my surgery. . I wouldn't worry about your diabetes they dealing with this all the time when I was operated on i was last in the list and could have water up to 3 hours before the operation. They will probably put you on a pump during the operation to stabilise your diabetes . Yes it's a bloody nightmare and this is the hardest time . The surgery is a breeze mine laster 7 . 1/2 it's amazing how you will just bounce back from this . It won't be long now
Take care X
Jayne
