Pathology

Hi all, I’ve been awaiting pathology results for a couple of weeks, and I’m showing signs of lobular disease they say. Today I should have got results, but I now have to wait for another week as my biopsies have now been sent from my hospital in Inverness to a pathologist in Glasgow for further opinion. I can appreciate the drs are being very thorough and I’m grateful for it. But waiting now for a fourth week is starting to take its toll on my levels of anxiety. Is this a common thing, or is it unusual to have another hospital look at tests? Any thoughts welcome Pray

Hi Heastaic63 welcome to the forum.

Im wondering if this sending to another hospital is as a result of a lack of Pathologists at National level rather then anything more sinister than that. It awful this time waiting and the only way to retain your sanity is to try to keep super-busy .

  • Like Granny says, but also, Inverness is a 'remote and rural hospital' and compared to Glasgow will not have as big a 'critical mass' of BC patients going through, compared to the city which has the Beaston Regional Centre of Excellence. I think it is good that they are double checking. Many brains applied to your specimens are better than one.

The waiting is hell. However, you want the correct answer and this is obviously the best way for them to get it for you.

Wishing you all the best and sending a hug.

  • Where I live and get treated, it seems that what I get told and what actually happens are often very different. As an example, I had surgery in the last week of August, still waiting for a final pathology report. I made some noise so they produced an interim report that still needs to be supplemented. Meanwhile I had another surgery, and I amuse myself with the thought that the pathology report for the second op may be ready before they finalise the report from the first one.

I'd say that them sending for a second opinion is potentially a good sign. If they had a clear view of bad things they would not have felt the need to consult a colleague. They also sometimes send samples to another facility when they want to do a test that they are unable to do in their own lab, and in Inverness this could be just their routine and is nothing to do with the sample but everything to do with the equipment they have or do not have.

As for how long it should take for a pathology report to come back, I was told by one doctor 7-14 days, by another 14-21 days, and I am already counting the 7th week.
