Hello,

Has anyone tried or is interested in trying alternative therapies alongside their conventional treatment plan?

I´ve had reiki in the past, reflexology once and lots of massages of varying types Sweat smile I´d like to still be able to try these and to try other ideas that might be recommended.

  • You have to be careful with massages especially deep tissue ones, post-operation and post-radiotherapy. I had a complimentary massage when I went for rads and was told no back /neck/ shoulder massage as the radiation can go all the way through to your back and make your skin sensitive.

I had a foot massage which was great!

Always tell them that you are going through treatment so they can adjust for you.

  • Thank you Btb. I´m going to be having chemo but I appreciate that I will have to tell them about my treatment for the appropriate adjustments.

  • I am very much in favour of alternative therapies providing I can verify the practitioner as an actual professional, and I make sure I keep my oncologist informed of what I want to do so they can offer advice.

As for what to go for, I saw some good information in a Maggie's centre. If there is one near you, it's worth checking, I'd assume the practitioners they are connected with would be truatworthy.

Hello  and agree   with your comments about alternative therapies  :)    Had Reiki a couple of times before (to set me up and be calm)  the surgery and then short sessions after radiotherapy and it didn't affect that though we are all different in reactions.     The therapist had about 15 years experience and a special rapport with c patients having gone through that rollercoaster.  I really hope you can find someone qualified in your area (I suggest asking to see their training certificates if they are genuine that should be no problem at all),  Its amazing experience and as non massage ticked the box for me, you may feel drowsy after and that is no bad thing after the hospital treatments and I dozed off at home!.   Some NHS trusts have them in as volunteers to aid patients with a gentle recovery.   I think Maggies do them and other therapies as well.

    Hope this helps.   Best wishes

  • Hi , have you had a look at the Penny Brohn centre in Bristol? They have a lot of online stuff and I’m sure could advise re complimentary treatments. I’m nowhere near it but keep meaning to look into online consultations. HFxx
