Hello all, Had mastectomy 4 weeks ago and now  just been given results from oncotype test and informed as it was high chemotherapy would be an advantage. Would love to hear from anyone who has had to make the decision as to whether to go for preventative chemo…….have to be honest the thought of it is freaking me out!……I thought I had a handle on it all but now I’m crumbling again.

  • Hi MrsPolly

While I didn’t have to make the decision to have preventive chemo I thought that as you haven’t had any replies yet I would talk to you.

While I won’t say chemo is easy it is doable. You will be given plenty of support from your medical team if you need it. You will be given contact numbers for your oncology nurses if you need advice about your treatment or if you have any side effects that you are worried about. They will do everything in their power to make sure that you keep well during your treatment.

Wishing you all the best whatever you decide to do.

    Best wishes

  • Hi I had a high oncotype score and had to make the decision as to have chemo or not. I had stage 1 grade 3 clear margines and lymph node clear. I'm about to have my 6th round of chemo next week apart from hair loss it was the right decision for me. Hope you make the right decision for you.

  • Hi Talbot, I was same as you, clear margins and lymph nodes, so stupidly thought mastectomy and hormone meds would be it, so it’s shook me up a bit when the result came back high……thank you for taking time to reply and continued good wishes for your treatment x

  • Be brave it goes so quickly cant believe I'm near the end. X

  • I’ll try, but feeling more like a quivering wreck this morning, I’m constantly jumping forward to the worst possible effects of the chemo, I try to tell myself it’s the clearing up of any rogue ‘leftovers’ so all for my benefit! Nice to hear you’re nearing the end of it xx

  • I felt exactly like you but once you start your treatment you start to settle down, you meet some lovely people going through the same as you it's so relaxing. And yes that's exactly what they are doing mopping up. X

  • Sometimes you just need to hear that you’re not the only one going through all this….have a good weekend xx
