Peau d’orange, redness, swelling and other IBC symptoms - can these go and come back?

Hello all of you wonderful people

For four days last week I had all the clinical signs of IBC. I wasn’t even - despite having a very strong BC family history - aware of what IBC is, until I googled redness, dimpling, orange peel skin, breast infection and of course found out soon.

Come Saturday (and my mammogram and US) all of my IBC symptoms had suddenly cleared up. Just before that - on Friday night - I could actually see some of the redness / rash I had been having in my breast move down my stomach, from my chest and into my stomach - thin symmetrical rash on each side.

The consultant I saw on Saturday looked at the photos I showed him of my symptoms from Tues- Friday but said it is not possible “for cancer to come and go”. Ie. I didn’t need to have a biopsy of other check, even though IBC doesn’t always show up in either a mammogram / US, because my clinical symptoms had come and then gone.

I am still having some feelings of nagging ache in the far right part of my right breast - where, if I wore an underwire bra, the wire would end. But the swelling and Peau d’orange has still gone.

Did you have symptoms of cancer - IBS / otherwise - that were transient / evanescent for a time (getting worse and then better then worse) in the time period leading up to diagnosis, please? I have seen some forum chats where women said they did but can’t find this in academic literature. Maybe they never thought to ask the question!

And if, like me, you felt that perhaps the all clear was given too quickly, what should I ask for in these circs? MRI? biopsy? Something else?!

thank you!

  • Hi Backing you I note that you have also posted your post in the Ask a Nurse section of the site and I feel it is the most appropriate place for your query. This is the exact area that I would have directed you to as they are the bests people to answer your query and will come back to you soon.

Thank you, Granny 59. Well spotted and I am hopeful that, yes, they will respond there.
