Kadcyla v Herceptin

Hi,

I have completed 3 rounds of Kadcyla now, following 18 rounds of chemo and a mastectomy. Results following surgery stated all of the tumour had been removed and there was no spread.

I was put on Kadcyla as the chemo had not totally removed the cancer from the breast. Kadcyla was to deal with any stray cells that might be in my system.

As the number of Covid cases seem to be growing again, I am beginning to feel a little concerned. Kadcyla is classed as chemotherapy and my chemo nurses have told me that I will need to be cautious, as my immune system will not be all that it should be. The removal of restrictions with regard to mask wearing, social distancing etc will mean that I have to be very careful.

I remember only too vividly the shielding of my first chemo; family unable to visit etc etc. Apparently the NHS are going to produce guidance soon for those of us who are classed as clinically extremely vulnerable.

I know that I couldn't go through anything like shielding again, as I live alone. Last time it was for 18 weeks, Kadcyla is for a total of 42 weeks. I feel that I'm just starting to get my life back.

I have had both vaccines but as these were given during chemotherapy, it's not known how effective these will be.

I am considering asking my oncologist to stop the Kadcyla treatment but ask if I can go on Herceptin injections, which are not classed as chemo and don'tt have an effect on your immune system. That way, the Covid booster and flu jab will be fully effective and I wouldn't be classed as clinically extremely vulnerable.

I know that this is something that I need to discuss with my oncologist, but I am just wondering if there is anyone else who finds themselves in this situation.

Many thanks

  • Ooh that’s also helpful to hear - I’m due for booster covid dose, Oncologist doesn’t feel need 3rd dose - but still concerned about having with Kadcyla treatment

  • Hi, I’ve decided to change date of return to work which is now 10 th January. I’ve now had 5 doses of kadcyla. My last 2 doses were reduced by 10% due to neuropathy in fingers and feet. Helped originally but soreness in feet first thing and last time of day. I’m determined to try and complete all infusions but it’s very important to monitor the neuropathy as it can really damage your fingers/feet/toes. I hate when it’s the week of blood test, chat with nurse then infusion on the Wednesday. We look ok but it’s trying to navigate the side effects and tiredness. The good thing is time is racing by now and all going well, I should finish 8th June x

  • I’ve had all vaccines recommended, however… I had my 3rd pfizer on the Tuesday night and next day I had kadcyla and bone infusion all at once followed by 4 th radiotherapy. Next morning I started vomiting and couldn’t stop, admitted overnight for IV fluids and was better next morning and managed to attend my next radiotherapy at hospital 7 miles away. Medical staff couldn’t say what caused it as have been fine on all chemos. Had 3 kadcyla since that episode and no problems. This is Just my experience remember. Breast nurse thinks I had too much put into me over those 2 days

  • Thank you so much for helpful info. It’s so good to be aware, but very pleased to hear you are racing through and all is going well.  My Oncologist tells me Kadcyla is absolutely the gold standard of treatment in ensuring no return - only recently being used for early stage cancer that hasn’t spread but few cells remaining after surgery - so like you, I feel determined to get through 14 treatments will keep you posted Heart

  • That does sound like a lot of treatment all at once - you are LITERALLY super woman, so happy to hear - all back on track and you’ve managed 3 further Kadcyla with no problems though xxx

  • Good stuff… keep going, won’t be long x

  • Take your 3rd dose

  • Plus I forgot to mention I took flu vac same time as pfizer

  • Thank you - inspired by you, BOOKED 3rd dose, Kadcyla today - waiting a week after what you told me then 3rd dose - will keep updated in case helpful for anyone else.  Thank youHeart

  • Good plan, hope your ok after recent infusion x
