I am interested to hear whether people were bothered by radiotherapy burns ? Are these preventable beforehand ? Did you use moisturiser before, did you get this on prescription and which is any good and works? I've asked my G.P.(not known for their helpful attitude) but they don't seem keen to prescribe. I'm fair skinned and used to get eczema.
My radiologists told me that using moisturiser doesn't make any difference to whether your skin is going to have a bad reaction but it does help keep the area from drying out, which would cause it to be itchy and itching would damage the skin badly when it has been damaged. I moisturised with aveeno from a few days before treatment and I still use it now (I finished treatment at the end of April), though mainly because I have loads left!.
The nurses at the radiotherapy place can prescribe you cream if you get a bad skin reaction, but if you want to keep moisturised then I was recommended to buy aveeno or E45 by both radiographer and oncologist.
Hi there. I developed a burn a month after treatment finished. Took me a bit by surprise as I thought I'd dodged that particular bullet! When I contacted my Breast Care Nurse she reassured me that it was completely normal.
I have used Aloe Vera gel every day twice a day since then, and it has healed really well. You can buy it on line and also from Holland & Barrett I think. It doesn't smell that great, but it is easily absorbed and is very soothing and moisturising. And most of the ones on sale are organic, so shouldn't do your skin any harm at all.
Good luck

Hi I went for my Ct scan today a head of my radiotherapy in 2 weeks time and I ask her what cream is best and she told me that to keep using whatever cream I was using so I told her I use aqueous cream and she said that was perfect as they one longer reccomend any sort of brand just to use what you have been maybe different centres are different? Xxx
I think that's right. I used the Aloe Vera as a recommendation from my acupuncturist, but the essential thing is to keep the skin well moisturised and supple, so as to avoid risk of it cracking and an infection developing. Go with what suits you best!
And good luck with your treatment.
