Hi.
17 days after radiotherapy finished and I am a little concerned that the treated breast is warm to the touch compared to the other. No swelling but still quite red. Is this something that anyone else has experienced? I have called the radiotherapy department but I haven’t had a call back yet. Thanks everyone.

Hi Waddler67 welcome to the forum. That breast being red to look at and hot to touch are both things that need a medical eye casting  over so I would get an appointment with the GP and see if they can have a look at this for you. If you had said this was only  a few days past the end of Radiotherapy then that I think does happen but after that it can set up as a cellulitis in the breast. Is there any skin on the breast that looks like orange peel?

If the skin does look like that and the breast is red to the touch also visibly red, then that could be the start of an infection and will need Anti Biotics. If you get a call back then I would suggest that they need to see you if they dont get back to you then an appointment with your GP is required.

  • I remember being told that my boob would glow at airport scanners for 12 months after radiotherapy had ended !  Not sure if it's true but I was told the effects on breast last after treatment ends.  I kept a tube of Holland & Barrett pure Aloe Vera gel in fridge & applied to my hot boob.  It felt hot & tight for a while after I finished radiotherapy but this did help cool it .  I did see my BCN because skin broke down underneath breast and she gave me flamazine cream and special dressings.  I found my BCN fantastic, very knowledgeable & supportive.  Nothing was a silly question; she got we stressed over whole treatment, side effects etc.

  • I was told that the radiation peaks at 2 weeks post-treatment and mine was a bit more red and hot at that time. They also said your skin and other cells should heal completely after 6 weeks, though protecting the area from the sun is lifelong.

Mine got noticeably better at about 4 weeks post-treatment, though it was never that bad, just a bit more red and warm. I have continued to use Aveeno cream and I am now 6 weeks post treatment and skin is fine.

Hopefully the radiotherapy department will call you back soon.

  • Hi

i completed my 15 sessions of radiotherapy on 6th May.  I was told it continues to work on you and peaks after 2 weeks then starts to get better. So I think you are just at that peak and start to get better point.

I suffered really badly with this treatment and got very severe blisters and skin breakdown under  my rather large breast and on my lumpectomy scar.  It was the worst part of my treatment so far! I have had 7 rounds of chemo and lumpectomy then radiotherapy.

Although I am now definitely on the mend my breast is still very sore, slightly swollen, warm to touch.... weird feeling too as it seemed to go very heavy and solid during treatment and it is now like it is thawing out......very bizarre!  I have basically been debilitated for over a month and my husband has done everything around the house and cooked every day and looked after me.  But I am on the mend now and over the last week have started to get out more and have started to go on walks with the dogs etc.  Still very tired all the time but not sleeping well due to the pain and discomfort of the sore breast!

but it is all downhill now and I am thinking positive!  You will get there. Take care and think positive too x
