Was diagnosed with breast cancer in March just after my dad passed away.  It’s been a whirlwind what with appointments and tests. The thought of everything has been hard. Test showed more cancer cells in lymph nodes.  having support from my family my surgery is next week and I’ve decided to have a mastectomy   It’s not the surgery that worries me it’s the recovery and the not knowing if I need anymore treatment.

  • Hi Saal, i had mastectomy and breast reconstruction at same time in March the moment iam already going true chemotherapy. You will stay in hospital over night after surgery, you will have different painkillers so you will not feel any pain. Follow physio advise with exercise, be active and positive . You will get your treatment plan very soon , sometimes mastectomy and meds for few years depend on type of your cancer. Take one step at the time breast cancer very treatable this days. If you have any questions iam very happy to explain . Take care of yourself x

  • Hi Saal,

First and foremost I am sorry about the timing for you and losing your dad

I had a mastectomy plus removal of 3 lymph nodes for analysis, on 17th (8 days ago). I have an existing health condition which complicated things so I was very worried. It was a relief to wake up in the recovery area and feel so much better than I imagined. I had implant reconstruction and the main concerns with me were around healing, but I went in on Thursday and things were going ok - phew. My consultant has been amazing and is so lovely, as is breast nurse. I am due the lymph nodes analysis so will not have treatment plan till then. As things stand it is said to be only in breast and medication will be the treatment but tbc. The physio came in to see me the next morning after the op, I started and have stuck to my exercises. I was discharged with paracetamol and a painkiller called tramadol. I had an assessment by the pain team who organised the medication, a visit from one of the breast team doctors who had seen me in recovery the night before, a visit from my consultant and then the breast nurse plus a stop-off at the breast care nurse's room on the way out of the hospital building to check on drains etc. It was a busy day after the op! I have found the 2 drainage tubes and bottles more annoying and uncomfortable than the 2 wounds to be honest. Importantly for my kids who are 10 and 14, I looked like me when I got home and I feel 100% like me.
