Has anyone had breast reconstruction following a total mastectomy? I'm trying to weigh up having reconstruction using fast from my stomach versus embracing a lack of boob and having a tattoo!
I'm not keen on a silicone implant.
Thank you
Hi
Me! I had a DIEP which is what you're describing in Dec, I was quite happy being flat but was also after symmetry and not having the faff of a prosthesis. The op is a long one, but that's irrelevant as you're having a lovely long sleep. I recovered really well, there are risks and it pays to be healthy beforehand, I think this was key to my recovery.
I am now fully fit and feel like super woman...and its the first time I've had a flat stomach! A very nice cancer by-product!
I was lucky to have the op privately as there are lengthy waiting lists and it differs by hospital so beware of this too.
Anything else you'd like to know just ask.

Hi Cathy, everyone is different, so the decision has to be yours. I had a temp recon after a full mx and was due to have a contra lateral mx and full bilateral reconstruction by diep flap in April last year. Unfortunately Covid kicked in and I’m now looking at 3 to 5 years before recon. The good news is that the other mx should be this year. I knew from the start that I didn’t want to be flat, but every one is different. My two sister in laws both stayed flat and one has a beautiful tattoo across the scarring. That’s not me though. I love my bikinis and I want my shape back. My hubby doesn’t mind either way, which is great, but it really is about what you want. Personally I can’t wait to have normal pert boobs again, instead of my matronly ones

None of us wanted to be in this group, but we are glad we're not alone.
Diagnosis 2/8/17 IDC Her2+, 22mm, with spread to several lymph nodes. TCHP chemo started 23/8/17, Mx with immediate, temp recon 24/1/18, rads 20/3 to 10/4/18, Herceptin by IV until Nov 18. RR Mx Jan 23. Still waiting for reconstruction, but opting for simple implants, as opposed to Diep, due to long waiting lists for diep.
