Hi and best wishes to everyone. I joined a few weeks ago then didn’t post as rushing around pre surgery. I had mastectomy plus after much consideration, implant reconstruction, on 10th. Home yesterday, 11th and look and feel err, like me, which is a huge relief. I have very fragile skin due to medication for a long term condition. Which is why (healing risk plus if I was pushing my body too far by adding another two hours of surgery), I got advice and spent time deciding on options.
As I predicted, surgeon taken aback by my skin, we had discussed a lot and both knew it was unknown till got started in theatre. I had to have mastectomy so the incision would have been the same anyway. I’m 53 and fit. Now concerns about healing. Surgeon came on ward yesterday and was very attentive and redressed wound and so far ok. He’s going to see me tomorrow and every 2-3 days as well as breast nurse. Sentinel results to follow but immediately I’m struggling with the elastic on the bra and my drainage tubes. I think I can do discomfort management with just paracetamol and twigged in the night that it’s this bra elastic that’s causing me far more discomfort than anything from surgery. Have ordered different brand this morning but I suspect all non under wired bras have big elastic to compensate. Is having the bra undone at the bottom and a scarf padded up near my tubes ok? Seems crazy to be taking tramadol to solve this. Ibuprofen and codeine meds are out for me.
Thank you and long post for short question!
Hi Historywoman
I didn't find bra's (M&S) that were specifically post mx (with pockets) to be uncomfortable, mind you mine were possibly a tad too large. Do bear in mind that initially you are likely to be swollen near the wound area, and you may have seroma's which may be causing discomfort/pressure (I did and didn't know for a while as everything is so new!). I find sports bra's have a lot more elastic so would suggest specific MX bra's given your challenge and maybe a larger chest size rather than scarf/undone combo.
I'm not a huge fan of painkillers, but as someone with a high pain threshold its fine for me to avoid, I found the constipation side effects a good reason to wean myself off them early doors.
Good luck and hope the healing issues get addressed.
Sam
Thanks so much Sam. I think it might be because of my particular skin issues. It’s very specifically where the drains go in, I’ve figured. I have very small boobs and the boob bit feels ok if that makes sense. Paracetamol def all I need. I’m much more comfortable standing or walking than lying down so I’m getting on the move today. Have to anyway as back to see surgeon and breast nurse because they are keeping such a close eye on me. Nice to meet you online and thanks again x
