Hi Everyone

After being diagnosed with High Grade DCIS, I was advised to have lumpectomy and Breast Conserving surgery, which I did not find as bad as I thought it was going to be. My follow up treatment would be a course of Radiotherapy, which I was not too worried about. I received devastating news three weeks later when I went back for my results. The DCIS was double the size they originally thought (110mm) although had manged to remove it all with a 0.3mm safe margin rather than the 1mm they like to take. Also 95mm of the DCIS had become invasive, which had not been picked up on the Mammogram, Ultra sound, MRI or the 5 biopsies I had before the operation. I was booked ion for a Mastectomy and a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy on the 24th Feb. During my next appointment results showed that I was also HER2 Positive so I would need Chemo and Targeted Therapy. My worst fear!!! My Mastectomy has been postponed because I need to start the treatment ASAP. My Consultant and the Breast Care Nurses have been fantastic but I am just so scared.

  • Gosh that’s just awful. Glad your team have been brilliant. Starting treatment is the key thing. Although directions change you can still do it. One day at a time. I was told I would have surgery and radiotherapy and they changed it to me needing chemo. It can seem devastating but my thoughts are to take the treatment offered. The experts know best. They will still be able to manage the situation for you. I’ve found nothing is straightforwardly in this journey. Take care and keep the updates on how things are going. I would love to know how your are getting on.

  • Hi Emie,

You've had a lot to take in, but try not to panic. My treatment plan changed as well to include chemo after my lumpectomy, when they found that my tumour was her2 positive.

The targeted treatments have really improved the prognosis for her2 positive cancer. I had herceptin and I’ve just finished a year of neratinib. I wonder whether you will have herceptin and pertuzamab. I know that many people on this site had chemo and targeted treatment before surgery and had amazing results, with tumours shrinking or disappearing altogether!

Try not to panic about the chemo. Until you start, you don’t know what side effects you’ll have and you can always ask for medicines to reduce side effects. The chemo thread is really helpful as well.

    Take care,

    Sarah x

I have started to get my head around it over the last few days and I am feeling a little better about things now. My Breast Care Nurse, who was a Chemo Nurse really talked me through things. I will definitely take what ever treatment they tell me to take as they are the experts and yeah there have been so many positive stories about the targeted therapy, so feeling more positive.

    Thanks Guys x
