Hello

I have intermediate DCIS.  After discussing my diagnosis with a surgeon yesterday at York Hospital, he is going to do a racket Mammoplasty - I've seen a little about this online but would like to know of any direct experiences about what it actually involves.  He's hoping to get me in in about 10 days time, bed permitting (and negative you-know-what test of course!).  Thanks.

  • Hi

A warm welcome to the online community although also sorry that you have a reason to join us.

I'm not going to be  a massive help, I'm afraid as that's a new one to me - I just had to Google it. I can't find anything on the main site or in the forums.

Hopefully someone will be along soon with some information. If not, then have you asked your surgeon if you can talk to any other patients who have had it done? I've known people who have done that before.

While we wait for someone to get back to you, have a look around and if there's anything else we can help with, give us a shout and we'll do what we can.

Hope you get some useful answers soon

  • Hi

Welcome to the group. I’m sorry that you need to be here but hopefully we can help support you through the process.

I hadn’t heard of a racquet mammoplasty before but after doing a quick internet search, I think that’s what I had as my first operation! I had a lumpectomy which also involved moving the nipple over a bit as taking out the tumour on the outside of my breast would’ve left it pointing outwards. I had 2 scars - one completely round my nipple and another 2-3 inch scar from my nipple towards my armpit. I have to say my surgeon did a fantastic job and you’d never know my nipple had been moved as the scar is invisible right on the edge of the areola. A year on, the other scar is barely visible.

The only thing I made sure I did was religiously do the arm exercises after the operation as directed by the physio, and also once the scars were healed and the surgeon said it was ok, I massaged the scars with Bio Oil. Massaging also helps to stop scar tissue hardening.

I hope that helps - if you’ve got any specific questions, please ask!  Otherwise I hope your operation goes well Slight smile

Thanks so much for that - I had my seed thingy fitted yesterday all ready for the operation on Tuesday and my surgeon, Ben Mancey-Jones at York was very thorough and good at explaining everything.  I thoroughly recommend all the staff at the Magnolia Centre at York Hospital for being very kind and professional in all their dealings with me as well.

  • That’s great news and wonderful you don’t have to wait long for your operation and that you’ve got a great team to support you. Let us know how it goes!  L x

Hello - this is Gerry again - I am having great difficulty re-entering this forum so had to use a different user name.  Anyway, my surgery has been postponed as I have had a diagnosis of MRSA.  They normally would put me on a treatment of nasal cream and wash for a few days and put me in a side room but that b***** virus has obviously made everyone ultra-cautious (it's not as contagious as MRSA in a way but hey ho!).  My question is - earlier this week they put a seed into the area where they needed to go - how long does that last?  Do they have to get that one out before they put a new one in?
