Double mastectomy with delayed reconstruction

Good morning,

me again! After finding I have 3 tumours in the one breast I wanted a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I had to argue my case as to why.
I have since been told that yes they agree to the bilateral mastectomy but my bmi is too high for immediate reconstruction due to coronaviris bmi has been put down to 30 where as in normal situation I would be eligible. Looks like I’m going in on the 19th November.
I have a few questions really, has anyone else had delayed reconstruction and how did you feel whilst waiting.

also I have to choose between diep flap and expanders I’m feeling the implants as I have stretch marks on my tummy from my 3 babies has anyone had this and the nee breast look ok.

and finally is there a chance I will still need treatment afterwards and how would I tell if I have cancer elsewhere! My breast I could feel the lump what if you can’t feel what’s going on in your body. I’m terrified it will come back

    Hi,

I'm going in on 18th November to have a mastectomy. I've just got the one lump but its a decent size so lumpectomy hasn't been an option. Ive been told that I'll have to wait at least 12months to have reconstruction, due to COVID. I'm gutted I'm having to wait but just trying to focus on the fact that I will be cancer free following my treatment. They have told me that once my breast is removed they will do further tests and the results of this could change my treatment plan. I already know I need chemotherapy but may need to have radiotherapy too.

Are you having chemotherapy? Have you had a CT and bone scan, as this will tell you if its elsewhere. I had both, they did find a shadow in my liver in the CT which is unrelated but I feel reassured by the fact I know its only in my breast and armpit.

  • Hi millie23

I havnt been told I’m having chemotherapy, was only supposed to have radio therapy if I was having the lumpectomy.

but they have said it all falls down to the pothology result and that will tell me more.
I havnt had any ct or bone scan and to be honest they havnt even mentioned it.
can I ask what type of breast cancer you have?
I hope everything goes well for you and am glad the shadow isn’t related x

Ah yes, they've told me mine could change depending on that too. But mastectomy and chemotherapy as a minimum.

I have NST breast cancer, HER2 negative but ER positive. My lump is approx 5cm x 3cm. I think I had the scans because of the lump in my armpit too.

Im not sure if my age has affected my treatment plan. Im 29. They initially thought I would need to start with chemo but changed it after my biopsy results. I'm going to clinical genetics to see if my cancer is caused by a gene mutation so could end up needing a double mastectomy and ovaries removed.

Hope all goes well for you too, its a stressful time x
