Breast lump

Hi everyone,

I’m 29 and I’ve been suffering with pain in a specific area (above my nipple and extending outwards) in my right breast. I went to the doctor who found a lump and referred me to the breast clinic. The lump was quite small and sometimes I found it hard to feel for.

So two weeks ago I attended the clinic and had an ultrasound. Upon checking my breasts the consultant said he could not feel any lump and the consultant radiographer or sonographer did feel the lump and checked it, however he said it looks all normal and it’s just tissue.

however, I’ve been suffering tenderness the last two days and upon feeling my right breast the lump is clearly bigger and more easy to locate which has me very anxious.

My big worry is that the consultant didn’t check as well as he should have, his breast examination was very light to touch and he said he couldn’t feel any lump. The lump is new and clearly only on the one breast. I’m hoping for some advice? Should he have sent me for a mammogram or requested and MRI to double check, should I contact my doctor to advise her it’s got bigger? Surely if it’s normal tissue as they said, then it wouldn’t get bigger or be so hard. It is clearly a solid lump very firm to touch.

Thanks

Hi Cici29 welcome to the forum. One of the main reasons they dont always do mammograms in young women like yourself is because the breast tissue can be very dense and doesn't always show up as it should on a Mammogram.

That said having been referred under the 2 week scheme to the Breast Clinic I would have thought that a Mammogram would have been undertaken as sometimes this can pick up on things not always able to be felt.Im not sure how they tell from visualising a lump on sonography how it is only tissue without taking a biopsy?

The simple answer to your question is most definetely yes and asap so get back in touch with the GP and tell them exactly what you told us.. Please do let us know how you get on? xxxx

  • Hi , I think you should contact your GP and explain what happened at the breast clinic and the changes you are now able to feel. Be persistent and don't be fobbed off without seeing a doctor. It may well be just tissue but it is obviously causing you a lot of concern and worry . The sooner you are seen by your doctor the better you will feel. Sending gentle hugs XX

When it was looked at later, my wife’s lump was missed on her Mammogram last December. As she’d had a history of breast cysts she thought it must be one another one of those at first.  Then she noticed the shape of her breast in the mirror, a phone call was made to the GP and a telephone consultation took place a few days later on 27th April. 10 days after that was her first Breast clinic appointment and things moved quickly, she had LICAP surgery on June 8th and started chemo on July 8th. They removed the lump and found cancer in her lymph nodes.  My view is to not take no for an answer, get the GP to refer you again and don’t hang about.

Thank you it’s nice to hear people say not to just accept it as my partner is advising me the consultant knows best and to forget it, but I feel something isn’t right here and it’s not resting easy with me. I wish you and your wife all the best going forward, and I pray that your wife has a speedy recovery. Wishing you all the best!

Thank you I am definitely going to contact my doctor tomorrow for another referral, and this time attend the referral with questions and make sure they do feel the lump. My previous appointment at the breast clinic I was too relieved when they said it’s normal to question it even though he said he felt no lump when my own doctor and I clearly feel it, it’s like a wee stone or just very hard and firm, but now sitting here tonight with the lump more identifiable than before I’m not willing to accept it’s nothing until they recheck it. Thank you Kwissy! X

  • Hi Coci29

a very worrying time for you and wanted to reaffirm earlier advice to have the lump rechecked. Our fab doctors and nurses do the very best they can but no one knows ourselves better than we do. I do hope you can gain peace of mind with a second test and be pre prepared with the questions you would like answered. I’m hopeless at remembering everything my partner wants answers to, she wasn’t allowed in with me for any appointments or surgery, and I have always found the BCN. more than happy to explain/answer the questions I have post appointment.

good luck and every good wish for a clear second test

Cancer may affect my body, but I won’t let it affect my spirit

Just wanted to update and thank everyone, as I went back and attended the breast clinic again to which the surgeon was brilliant examined me did an ultrasound, could feel the lump and brought me back for a review just so he could keep an eye on it, upon my review a few weeks he said it had got bigger and a core biopsy was done (awaiting results). But just goes to show importance of challenging opinions when you know and feel something isn’t right.

    good luck x

  • Thanks for update and hopefully the biopsy shows nothing sinister x

  • I would just like to echo what has said Keep in touch and fingers crossed for your biopsy results . Sending hugs xx Kwissy

Definitely go back and ask for another check. I went to gp last April and was referred but mammogram came back all clear. In Dec I felt a definite lump that was much bigger and went back. Still nothing on mammogram but ultrasound picked it up as cancer. I knew it wasn’t right so don’t give up ask for extra tests.

I really hope it’s nothing, but push until you know for sure, I know it’s hard.
