Wait times for treatment (between diagnosis to first chemo session)

Hello all, how long is a normal wait time between diagnosis to first chemo session? Everything moved so fast at the breast clinic!

Diagnosis Tuesday, scans Wednesday, clip placed on tumour Friday, heart scan Saturday.

All I have been hearing about triple negative is that it is aggressive and spreads fast. I heard from oncology yesterday and the earliest appointment  to discuss my treatment plan is 3 weeks from now.

Knowing that this cancer is growing in me and nothing I can do about it is really scary. I have called to ask why I can't go in  sooner and was treated like I was an inconvenience who was expecting too much.

I suppose things moved so fast the first week, that that was my expectation across all departments.

It would be great to hear of other people's experiences please.

Many Thanks,

Aloha x

  • First of all I am sorry you are facing this. During the 3 weeks to your appointment they will be gathering data from your scans, biopsies etc, in order to decide upon the best treatment option for you. Your situation will be discussed by a multidisciplinary team taking into account everything they learn. Once you have met with oncology it’s all likely to start fairly quickly. You might be sent away to consider risks and benefits and then go back for a second appointment to give consent. You might need a port or PICC line fitted before you start treatment. I think my first infusion was something like 2 weeks after my first oncology appointment. Try not to worry too much about what’s going on inside you. Aggressive doesn’t mean it’s likely to do a wild takeover in the next few weeks.
