Hello, receantly diagnosed with stage 1 triple negative breast cancer. Still waitong on a treatment plan. Everyone keeps telling me to stay away from sugar as it feeds cancer. Has anyone been advised this? And what does stay away actually mean? I mean can i have a chooclate bar? Can i have the odd desert? Im not planning on indulging but the odd chocolate bar here and there?

  • Hi Lou86,

    Welcome to the forum.

Sorry I've never heard this or been advised by anyone to stay away from sugar.

I've had my op chemo and radiotherapy, now on Letrozole. I don't recall anyone saying no sugar.

I hope you get your treatment plan soon.

    Sending hugs xx

  • Hello,

People have also said this to me and when I spoke with someone in the hospital (can’t remember who now) - there is no evidence I don’t think to show this is true.

I have never smoked or don’t drink alcohol and still got breast cancer! I wouldn’t say I have the best diet but I know others who are worse and don’t have cancer.

What indulges can we have? Life is going to be very boring!

I got told to eat and drink whatever I wanted because your taste buds and what not may disappear for a short period or change while on chemo.

Good luck on your journey xx

  • Hi

Yes, in answer to your questions - you can have treats!

This is a very old adage and I remember hearing it when I was very young.  Actually the way to think, is look to live a 'healthy life'.  Being very overweight is bad for the heart and puts a strain on the body overall, but indulging in a little of what you want is actually the way to live!

Initially when I was diagnosed 7 years ago, I was worried about drinking alcohol. I went on holiday and had alcohol when I was a way - shock, horror - the cancer didn't come back Slight smile  So, look at your lifestyle, if you do everything in moderation (and that includes sugary treats), then this is 100% ok!

Good luck with your treatment, I do hope you do ok - try not to overthink everything you are doing and enjoy your chocolate bars/deserts.

Here's a link to Cancer Research, which proves interesting reading and dispells the myth (unless obese).

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • Hi, there is a really good book The Cancer Road Map  written by Dr Liz O'Riordan she was a breast cancer surgeon who developed breast cancer, she answers common questions as well as exposing harmful myths, and hype . I found it really helpful as there is so much mis information out there.

  • Thank you. I had the chocolate bar and did speak to my oncologist who said the same. Everythibg in moderation.
