Hello!
my name is Alex and I’m new here. I was diagnosed HER2+ in 2017. I’ve been taking Tamoxifen since 2018 and have been struggling with fatigue. Initially I thought it was a symptom of the treatment but it hasn’t improved. One oncologist (not my own) told me to stop taking the Tamoxifen. A recent blood test showed that my Folic Acid is low. My doctor prescribed me 5mg Folic Acid but on checking, I discovered that up to 1mg of Folic Acid can increase the chances of the cancer returning.
I am at the end of my tether so I’m really hoping that someone has a magic solution to this problem.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and advice.
Hi there, it’s so difficult and very confusing to have conflicting advice, I empathise completely. If it were me, I would try and get an appointment with the oncologist to discuss the fatigue, tamoxifen and folic acid. Your GP may not be an expert on the links to cancer, but the oncologist should have a more clear view on that.
Alternatively you could also contact the expert team here at Macmillan. When I had a similar question on supplements they were able to send me some reputable research links which I could rely on myself. I know there's a tendency to Google, but the results are not always reliable so I'd suggest not to do that. You can contact them via this info page Contacting MacMillan link
best wishes
Thank you so much for the advice. I will contact the breast care team and see what they say. Its just always such a mission to get an appointment isn’t it?
I will also try the MacMillan team too.
thanks for you help x
Hi Alex N, I'm quite interested to see what responses you get. I was diagnosed with oestrogen fed breast cancer in 2020, i've been taking Tamoxifen for 4 years. I didn't notice a lot of side affects to begin with but now I'm really struggling with fatigue. I had a set of bloodtests done by the doctors which they said were satisfactory but I'm not sure what they tested for or what the actual results were so I am going to ask for further details. I get really achy legs and cramp in my legs. The aches wake me up in the night. I also went to the optician recently and they say I have retina toxicity which is from the Tamoxifen and the only way of stopping it getting worse is to come off the Tamoxifen. The optician wrote to my doctor, I have received a telephone appointment from the docs on 13th January so I assume its to discuss this. All in all I am really thinking of coming off the tamoxifen and relying on my annual check ups to keep an eye on it. My plan is to get details of my blood tests when the dr rings next monday and then ring the cancer nurse to discuss
