Radiotherapy-tips please

Hello all

I had a lumpectomy at the beginning of November and I start my 5 days of radiotherapy in January. Does anyone have any advice/tips please.

  • Drink LOTS of water.  That's my no. 1 tip.

I'm nearly at the end of 20 sessions, I've been drinking around 4 pints a day - at least 1 in the morning before my session (it's early).  So far I've avoided the dreaded fatigue so I guess it's working?

I'm moisturising morning & night and have a bottle of organic aloe vera gel in the fridge which I apply after the session.

  • I also had 5 sessions of radiotherapy. I used Aveno moisturiser before and after I went for my radiotherapy each time. I also went for a short walk each day if I felt like it.
Hope all goes well in January.

  • Hi, wear the softest, not tight bra, easy to get on and off and a oversized top you can throw over your head and be done.  You are only in there quite briefly and always aware of being quick to dress/undress s our dept didn't have a separate changing facility, just a chair in the room with the equipment itself.

I used Aveeno several times a day for a couple of months and still use it at least once a day now.  Drink water as previously suggested and try not to worry, it was almost an anticlimax for me as I had been so het up.  In and out, the hardest bit was the drive back and forth each day, around 75 minutes each way!

  • Another vote for Aveeno, wonderful stuff, and soft bras.

I hope it goes well for you

    Hug xx

  • I also used aveeno and still do.  During radiotherapy my arm went numb while I was on the table.  I was advised to wear a glove to keep my hand warm.  Don’t take any supplements not prescribed.  I was taking vit c but read you should stop before radiotherapy.

  • Thanks everyone for all your tips.

Driving 75 miles a day must have been very tiring. Luckily my hospital is only a 15 minute drive away.

Aveeno seems to be the go to moisturiser. I've put it on my list

Good luck to everyone going through all this at the moment.

  • Did you have chemo. Just wondering.

  • oh no, i have been taking as we were getting colds, i will stop now

  • No..I didn't have chemo..I was stage 1 grade 2 IDC. I had a lumpectomy beginning of November . 5 days radiotherapy starts in January then letrazole for 5 years

  • Hi Dct I hope you dont mind me asking but I dont understand your last post there? Can you shed any light for us? what have you been taking and why will you need to stop???????
