Hi, can anyone advise if it is normal to only have a breast area MRI at this stage or should I expect a full body scan still? Thanks x
A full scan would be done if it's in your nodes, or you were having a DIEP to locate blood vessels.
I had MRI to check how big it was after mammogram and ultrasound diagnosis, breasts only. I had to have a neck to pelvis CT scan to check for spread before chemotherapy.
They didn't think it was in my lymph nodes but I think CT scan common before chemo as it will determine what type they give you.
They don’t believe it’s in my lymph nodes but I am have a bubble injection to look at this before surgery so maybe they don’t believe it’s necesssry unless anything is found then!
Morning Lou Lou C I had the bubble scan done then only breast scanned when I had mine done and it was so much easier than full scan which I had had previously for a different condition you just lie face down on the scanner bed with your breasts in a foamy well with the nipples having a cod liver oil capsules taped to them as apparently they nipples don't show on scan and it only takes 5-10minutes
Hi Lou Lou C, prior to surgery (lumpectomy & lymph node biopsy) I just had a breast MRI as there was no indication that it had spread to my lymph nodes. After surgery I was sent for further scans prior to chemo - CT & bone scan - to see if it had spread further (it hadn't). It's natural to worry about it having spread but your treatment, including scans, will be tailored specifically to you and your cancer size, type etc, and they will have a lot more information after surgery. Try to take each step at a time if you can, and trust that your team will request further scans - if necessary - at the appropriate times. When are you having your surgery and what is being done? I hope it all goes well x
Morning Kentish Maid, thanks so much this has really helped knowing this will be an easier option going forward. I am feeling a little lost with taking it all in but sure things will become clearer once I have got through the tests. Have a good day xx
Morning Lalalou, this makes complete sense and I feel happier knowing this is a normal route to take. I don’t have a surgery date yet but looks like I could have chemo prior to surgery if beneficial to reserve more breast tissue as the lump is high at the top of my breast and will be having a lumpectomy. I also have some calcification in the right breast which may not need surgery and may be done my vacuum but this is undecided until MRI is done next week! So much to take in and so scared of losing my hair as I still want to work and feel as much me as possible. As you said I will take it one step at a time! Thanks for your kind thoughts! Have a lovely weekend x
