Itching on letrozole

Hi, this is my first post!

I had ER and HER positive breast cancer diagnosed on a routine mammogram last May. I’m post mastectomy, Paclitaxel course completed last September and I’m over half way through Herceptin.

I’ve come through it all ok, but have developed severe total body itching which I’ve worked out must be a side effect of Letrozole since the symptoms calmed down after a few days off treatment. It’s returned a few days after restarting. I’ve even switched manufacturers to no avail.

I’m wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how you have coped? I’m a retired doctor myself so am pretty savvy, but ordinary things like antihistamines don’t work and I’m losing a lot of sleep
Any ideas?

  • Hi,

I have a friend who had the same problem. She made up an ointment of coconut oil and cbd oil. I have to try and get the recipe. She said that was the only thing that worked for her.

  • Thank you, the recipe would be great!

  • I'll let you know as soon as I get it. She's in Germany at the moment.

  • OK, she sent me a recipe without cbd oil. She said she also saw a dermatologist, and she got special light treatment there as well.

    So you need:

    50 gramm coconut oil

    20 ml Argan oil

    8 gramm emulsan

    70 ml aloe vera gel

5 drops of vitamin d3 oil

15 drops of a preservative ( she used biokons plus, available on amazon, or use a different brand)

Place coconut oil, argan oil and emulsan into heat proof glass jar/container. Place the Aloe vera gel into a separate container. Put both jars into a saucepan with hot water. When oil has melted remove the jars. Now add the aloe vera gel to the other jar whilst stirring. Place that jar into saucepan with cold water and keep stirring until lukewarm. Now stir in, drop by drop, the remaining ingredients. Fill the cream into a clean jar and keep refrigerated.

    That's it, hope it helps.

Hello,  can you take another aromatase inhibitor?  It really is terrible to be itchy.  I am going through radiation now and  I know they want to put me on AI too as tumors both breasts are strongly ER+.  Not looking forward to it and am looking for alternatives but so far no luck. Good luck and hope your skin feels better soon.

  • Tthank you Barbara. I'm getting in touch with my consultant to see if there is an alternative he can recommend.
I hope all goes well for you. I was ok on it for 6 months but drug effects can come at any time out of the blue.
I will post again  when I’m  (hopefully) sorted.

  • Just to add to the mix. I am on tamoxifen and started it in July last year. Around Xmas, I got a red rash like hives on my torso and now have itchy skin on legs. Dry skin too. Got prescribed E45 itchy skin. Use it some days. E45 now doesn't seem to like me now even though I have used it for years. Switched to cerave. I was also prescribed fexofenadine hydrochloride which a strong anti histamine although the pills are large and even cut up I struggle to swallow them. Resorted to taking the 10mg one a day loratadine some days. Apparently it is a menopause symptom and the drugs make it worse cos it is stopping the oestrogen. Try asking GP or doc for some stronger antihistamine. I've found just trial and error with a combination is working so far.  Good luck x
