Hi everyone, I have been diagnosed with breast cancer recently. I had surgery to remove the tumour and the biopsy of the lymph nodes was negative. I will get chemo, radio and hormone therapy.

Now, I was just wondering if anyone knows a good place to buy scarves/soft caps, that are not too expensive (around 15-20€). I live in Co. Donegal and am on a low income. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Dear B1975

I lost my long hair after 2.5 weeks after my first cycle of Chemo which started in May 2021 and I had opted to use the cold cap.   Unfortunately the cold cap did not work for me.   My hair came out in clumps on a weekend...2nd cycle of Chemo being due 4 days later.   The following weekend my hairdresser came to my home and cut my hair very short.   Then it still came out... was devastated.   However being bald was alien to me but I managed to speak to my Macmillan Support team and they advised me to buy cotton bamboo turbans for the colder months and some beautiful silk scarves for the summertime.   I did this through Amazon.   The scarves started at £9.75 each, lightweight and very pretty....so many to choose from.

The turbans...you can buy 4 or 6 in a pack...they cost me under £20 for 6.   They are so soft.   If you have access to Amazon, just type in "Chemo turbans or scarves".

The other alternative is the Macmillan Support Team, will advise and can assist you financially.   I never used them financially because my firm has been paying my salary for nearly 10 months.

I hope the above helps you.  I wish you good luck going forward.

  • Thanks so much. I just like to be prepared. I am not too worried about loosing my hair, it'll grow back. Just want something pretty to wear. Will check out amazon.

  • Dear B1975

Thank you for replying.   I attach for your information screen shots of the soft turbans and scarves I have.

I am still undergoing treatment and will be for at least another year.   Love my turbans and scarves.   Do also have a wig which my parents bought me.

As has been mentioned, Macmillan will also advise on sourcing wigs and, can supply one or two.   Hope you find what you are looking for regarding headwear.

We all have a "fight" ahead of us.  Positivity and support from loved ones, family and friends go such a long way.

Baby steps for each and every one of us.

  • Hi. I had breast cancer removal and one lymph node removed to test it (although it initially showed as negative in biopsy, in August 2021. Went back for results in Sept and was shocked to be told I had stage 3, lump had grown much bigger (8mm to 42mm plus margin removed after 2 months) and lymph node was also positive, so I had chemo which ended last month and have to have under arm lymph nodes removed on 4/3, the, after result, hopefully, just radiotherapy and hormone treatment. In between, my heart rate had dropped too low for them to carry out the injection part if the chemo, so I have heart scan, mid March , to see if they can carry on with this.. I opted for the cold cap, which initially seemed to work well, but after my second session I started to lose a bit more hair - not clumps but it thinned a lot. Since chemo stopped my hair has really come out so I can see my scalp. I have a wig I can wear if I want to, but bought a few scarves on EBay. The nicest (and most comfortable) are from  U.K. seller. Beautiful-you - they do really stretchy hats with scarves you can thread through the front and they are so comfortable! They cost under £10 each..I’ve also found a local shop with scarves from £3-£6 selling scarves that for these, so have 2 hats - one I keep in the car & one in the house - and lots of coloured scarves I can use with them. I also have a stock of sunhats, baseball caps & factor 50 suncream in the house in case (hopefully!) the weather changes…. Good luck with your treatment! '

  • Hi Cookie,

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

I am sorry to hear you have to have a heart scan, I am hoping everything will turn out well for you. Sending you happy, positive thoughts, and a virtual hug. Stay strong!

  • Hi Karen,

They look lovely, I'll have to have a look at them. I don't think I'll go for a wig, but would love some nice and maybe funky scarves. The turbans look really nice. Thanks for your help, you are right, love and positivity and a good measure of humour go a long way.

  • I found  Amazon a good place for beanie type hats + bed hats with satin inside which are really comfy...hope this helps x

  • I bought a lot from Amazon but also a company called Shein. They have a delivery charge of £2 but they start from 1.75. They have GORGEOUS FUNKY colours too. You will also have a couple of weeks delivery wait but its worth it for price and variety.

    Good luck !!!
