Hi everyone, I found out last week that I have breast cancer. Thankfully found early and hasn't spread but now trying to wrap my head around the very real likelihood that I'll need a mastectomy in the New Year. My head is spinning with al the various options re reconstruction and pros and cons. Guess I'm not alone in this emotional rollercoaster!
Hi, I had a lumpectomy so didn't have the same choices around reconstruction but there will be many ladies on here who can offer to share their experiences. Wishing you the best as you get though this stage of decision making and uncertainty, I found that the most challenging.
Firstly, sorry that you had to join this group but on a positive note we've all been where you are with regards your emotions. Some of us have had lumpectomy and some of us have had mastectomys and I know for one that my thoughts went to losing my whole breast and how would I cope. But I soon learnt that you brain really does go into negative overdrive if you let it. You have to take one day at a time, keep yourself busy with things you enjoy doing. You'll also find you will be inundated with appointments. The thing you must hold foremost in your thoughts is that BC is one of the most curable cancers and with the right support you'll get through this. Also talk about it don't bottle it up and cry if you feel like it. If I could have done I would have put it on the radio/TV telling the world that I had it. I made purple around me be positive and yes there are those negative ones but I would not allow them to bring me down.
Like you my BC was caught early, I was diagnosed in June of this year but due to other medical problems I was unable to be operated on until September, and my consultant only offered a lumpectomy along with removal of two lympth nodes, which were clear. My BC is hormone fed so I will be taking hormone tablets for the next 5 years and I've just started my radiotherapy.
Have you had a biopsy yet, this will give you and your BC team a better idea on how to treat you cancer as you haven't mentioned it in not sure if you have.
I hope this has been helpful, I can ramble but hopefully I have given you some help.
Good luck and take baby steps to get through this. We are all here for you and I have found the sipper from people on this site invaluable. Lastly don't look up Dr Google speak to the professionals also the MacMillan site is good.
