Hi
I am so nervous about upcoming chemo and wonder if anyone out there have got any experience to share about Docetaxel & Carboplatin and also Trastuzumab and Pertuzumab?
There also is possibility of Kadcyla for 18 cycles.
I hope for some assurances and how do I manage with SEs please?
Thank you
C x
Hi Claud272 chemo is not as bad as it's press, it is doable and with modern drugs most side effects can be controlled, please rememberr that will will not get all the side effects, I had 3 of the same drugs that you will be getting but Trastuzumab & Pertuzumab are targeted therepy not chemo drups, , don't forget you will not get all the side effects, you can do this, the nurses are great, they will help you through. One day at a time. love from Ann
Chemo affects everyone differently. Some people sail through it and others really struggle with it, and can end up in hospital.
I can only share my experience with EC and docetaxel.
I found with EC that I was worst at the beginning and then it gradually got better. A bad week, an OK week and a good week. I vomited a few hours after the first cycle and couldn't stop so was hospitalised to get an IV of antisickness. After that, they gave me even stronger anti sickness meds on top of the standard and I didn't vomit again though I felt nauseous for the first week.
Feeling sick with no appetite was probably the worst side effect on EC. I started losing my hair before the 2nd cycle but I had already shaved it off so that was no big deal.
They give you really good anti sickness dugs so take them as prescribed. Only about 20% of people are still sick these days.
I was able to go out for walks every day and was doing a slow jog by day 10.
I found docetaxel much worse. It knocked me for 6 that first cycle and they reduced my dosage after that which was easier.
I found docetaxel started off fine but I was sore days 3 to about 6 and then had other side effects later like skin sores, discoloured nails, nose sores.
I found my muscles felt like jelly and I struggled to walk far, especially as I was breathless if I did much.
But, you get through it! And then you're out the other side and recovering.
Good luck. I managed to work from home apart from a few days off after each cycle so although it is tough, it was very doable for me.
Thats all good to know. I'm starting in 2 weeks time, 6 rounds of it. I'm scared of it but most people seem to manage ok..xx
Hi, I had the same 4 drugs as you mention and whilst we all react differently, my experience was quite manageable and I worked throughout, so I was lucky. I have blogged since I was diagnosed, but this one on managing side effects might be interesting for you. Good luck x
Thanks - will definitely read up! Sleep well, goodnight.
