Biopsies

Hi there,

I’m taking part in some research about outcomes of  breast cancer treatment - how  some people are successful and others are not.
I have had blood samples and biopsies and are due to have some more now that I am half way through chemo.

Although I asked my oncologist if taking biopsies could increase spread, the reply was a bit nothing really, so I’m asking here what do you think?
I’m keen to help and do my bit towards research but I’m now just feeling a little worried…

The biopsies are a little invasive and sore after so I’m not looking forward to it.  Obviously, the tumour is punctured but does this matter?

  • I am not aware of cancer spread being a side effect of biopsies and I wouldn't be worried about that. I even just looked it up to see if I could find anything on it, and nothing came up.

There is a risk of infection, as with anything that punctures the skin, but this is minimal.

  • I follow your rationale. You could phone McMillan help line and ask. Or, you could put your question in writing/email to the onc.

I know what you mean about being all for research. We are all benefiting from what has been done before and the ladies down the decades who took part.

Still, it is a tricky one.......

With a normal [non-research] biopsy the risk-benefit equation is stacked in your favour i.e. benefit to you, as it is giving more information pertinent to informing your diagnosis and your consequent treatment.

    Research..............................? I dont know.

Hope you get the answer that you need.

  • Thanks WallyDug for answering.  Maybe I’m overthinking it - you’re reply is appreciated.

  • Thanks Beatthebreast. Some good common sense there - reassuring.
