Hi, recently diagnosed after breast screening, have been advised Grade 1invasive ductal carcinoma. Currently waiting for a date for lumpectomy, I am on blood thinners so they need to check when they can be stopped for surgery, in the meantime I have been prescribed Letrozole as they can’t operate straight away. Does anyone get dizzy when they are lying down in bed, very odd sensation! My other question is about time off work for a lumpectomy, I have an office job and no driving so was wondering what to expect and also how long after surgery does the radiotherapy usually start? Chris
Hi Chris, so sorry to have to meet you here!
I am on letrozole too and and although I have had a number of side effects, feeling dizzy when lying down is not one of them. I wonder if this might be to do with your blood thinners and it is probably a good idea to talk to the the medical team about it.
I think for the majority of people, radiotherapy doesn't start until about 6 weeks after a lumpectomy as the wounds need time to heal. It took a little while for me to stop feeling exhausted after my operation because of the anaesthetic that was still in my body, but I gather that different people have different experiences. The pain subsided within a couple of days but I was still too needing to take a nap in the afternoon quite frequently. I wonder if you could discuss returning to work with your breast care nurse?
I found this forum really good for support and gaining knowledge. Wishing you all the best with your treatment plan and hoping that it goes smoothly and you have a lot of support. x
thank you for your reply, I did not think about a possible connection with the blood thinners and Letrozole so yes I will speak to the medical team about this, I do have other side effects such as hot flushes, mood swings and joint pain but was sort of expecting those. Chris x
Hi
Welcome
i was advised not to drive for two weeks after lumpectomy.
I wasn’t in any pain after the lumpectomy but I had terrible brain fog for a couple of weeks from the anaesthetic.
I think it all depends on the job you do but I’d definitely take 1 to 2 weeks off after surgery
Lots of people work through their radiotherapy treatment and if you ask the radiographers they can try and schedule your appointments at the beginning or end of the day.
You will get a wound check 10 days to 2 weeks after surgery when you will get your surgical results.
you then get referred to the oncologist who will see you about 4-5 later. They explain the treatment options and option your consent to proceed and they refer you to radiotherapy planning who will give you your planning appt for 2 to 3 weeks later.
you will start RT two to 3 weeks after planning. So in total it’s probably 8 to 10 weeks after surgery depending where you live in the country
