I was diagnosed with grade 3  invasive ductal carcinoma 5 years ago. It appears to have returned or at least never left! 5 years ago I had lumpectomy, chemo, radio etc. This time it will be a left breast mastectomy. Obviously really disappointed but it is what it is so need to prepare for surgery again. Been giving mastectomy a great deal of thought. My strong feeling is that I would prefer to have both breasts removed, not because of cancer, but because I know I wouldn't copy well being lopsided. Have large breasts so, as I understand it, difficult to have implants. Surgeon will discuss options with me in 2 weeks. Has anyone decided to have bi-lateral due to the problem I foresee above?

  • Oska,

    Sounds like my journey.

I had a failed lumpectomy for dcis 11 yrs ago, left mastectomy, was to have radiotherapy but they changed their mind and no radiotherapy, no medication.

Back 3 mths ago even with missing left breast I found a Clam like lump attached to the left of my mid side area below axilla...so far down, c in lymph nodes, had invasive ductal c.

Here goes again, have had total axillary clearance(v painful) developed large seroma after 1st Sep op now holding up radiotherapy.

They told me 2 breasts are completely separate as I asked about getting right one removed also because of the 'Recurrence' that surgeon describe that has returned..there's me thinking breast gone no more c!

I used a softie(stuffed fake breast and had a silicone one made to measure so I never was lopsided),I had 36 G breasts....v large, so don't worry about that, mastectomy aged 50...I really never had a day off work, no problems.

    Good Luck.

    Katrina.

I'm so with you on this. You may need to almost insist. I had a bilateral mastectomy in August and whilst it's a shock to have cancer in  both breasts I found it all so hard I just couldn't come back to this again. I know it may come back but less likely if you have no breast tissue.  I am also able to choose the size of my breasts for prothesis and that pleases me.  I'm not having any reconstruction I just can't be bothered with it but I'm 64 . My daughter would have wanted reconstruction if it was her but she is 38 so that's understandable.  When I got to the operating theatre the anesthesist said to me " well Jayne your are not coming back then" too bloody right I'm not coming back! I think you have made a brave and understandable  decision. The pain from a bilateral mastectomy is  not very painful . Did have cording and a Seroma which was uncomfortable but you can get that with any breast surgery. Take care
