Hello , I am new here , not sure if on the right group . Cater for my partner who has just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer . Sentinel node biopsy plus lumpectomy last week . Both very afraid . Where can I get some advice Thankyou.

  • Hi @Chairline

Welcome to the forum.  This is a good group for you to be on and you will find plenty of advice for your partner here.  This is the busiest of all the groups on this online Macmillan site as breast cancer is so prolific.

Do you know your partner's diagnosis? What type - Oestrogen positive/ HER2/ triple negative etc? What size was her tumor or was it DCIS? What grade did the surgeons suggest it was?

You might not know all this information at the moment if you haven't had the results of the sentinel biopsy/definite details following the surgery yet, but when I had mine they were pretty certain the type and grade and size before my operation from the initial biopsies when the cancer was originally diagnosed.

Have they given her an idea of what her treatment plan is likely to be?  Chemotherapy? Radiotherapy?  Again, they might not know for definite yet until after the sentinel biopsy, but they might have given her a rough idea already.

As mine was Oestrogen positive for the tumor, I didn't need chemotherapy.  I had lumpectomy and radiotherapy which I found ok and I will be honest, the fear of waiting for results / and fear of what I was going to have to go through was loads worse than actually going through the treatment.

If you are able to update your profile with more information on her diagnosis/ provide more information on here, then there'll be lots of ladies who'll be able to help you.

The main thing to remember is that the lumpectomy has removed the cancer at this stage (obviously dependent on the sentinel node biopsy) and survival rates for breast cancer these days is absolutely amazing!  There is so much research going on and even though I had BC just over 4 years ago, there are treatments around now that weren't around for me then - it shows how fast moving the treatments of BC is.

    Best wishes, Lesley

    Hi Charline

Yes you in the right place . I expect you are waiting for the pathology report on the tumor now?   the waiting is an anxious time . Try and hold on to the idea for a lot of women surgery is all they need especially with an early Breast cancer. Just concentrate on getting your partner well again after the surgery and look after yourself too!

    Cheers
