Hi guys

So I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August and I'm having a lumpectomy and lymphnode biopsy this Friday. I thought I was handling this OK but I'm now starting to worry about what the remaining part of my boob will look like.

I hope every one reading this is doing OK x

  • Sorry you find yourself here Melm.   I have recently had a lumpectomy and biopsy and felt fine but sore afterwards.  Think my boob is still a bit swollen but so far, 11 days later, apart from the scar which is healing well, I can’t see any difference.  I suppose it will depend on the lump size but I’m small boobed and I can’t see a dent so far.  I suppose that might change as the swelling goes down.  The op took about 45 mins and no dressing as the incision was glued.  Just wanted to reassure you that I found it much easier than anticipated and it felt a big step forward mentally.  I was well looked and came out the same day.  Quite a lot of waiting around as I had to be there at 7 am and think the op was lunchtime.  Good luck xx

  • Hello MELM, welcome, you'll find lots of friendly support here. I had a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy in May and was worried what it would look like afterwards but bear in mind that it takes time for things to heal and get back to normal after surgery so what your boob looks like immediately afterwards won't be the same as how it looks several months later. It will also depend on whereabouts in your boob the lump was removed from, and how big the lump was, and how big your boobs are normally. My lump was around 44.5mm but it was taken form the upper outside area, and now that the swelling has gone down and the scar has faded a bit it looks ok, with no dent, and when wearing clothes you can't even tell that I've had anything removed or see any scarring. They used blue dye to locate the lymph nodes so you will also get some blue colouring to your boob which lasts for a while - mine is still a little bit blue but has almost all gone now. hope things go well for you on Friday x

    Hi Wobbly1

Thank you so much for your reassuring words. The lump was originally 1.8cm but seems much bigger now. The cancer team have been brilliant. I don't have the best boobs to begin with, but sure a decent bra will hide the removal. I'm glad you're doing OK and hope your oath forward is straightforward for you xx

    Hi LalaLou

Aww bless you. I'm glad your recovery seems to be going well. The lump is only 1.8cm but is attached to the nipple. I think it's called a lebular tumour. I will be losing both the lump and my nipple. The blue dye sounds fun. My hubby is already calling me smurf and is planning on buying onions to see if my tears turn blue!

Take care and thank you x

  • Hi I didn’t have the blue dye I just had the isotope injection, but I’m sure I read on here that your wee turns blue too.
I have lobular cancer and had a lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy in July, I didn’t have much pain it was just uncomfortable for about a week but I was all healed in 2 weeks and back driving about 2-3 weeks after op.

    Sending big hugs for Friday

    Diane x

  • Thank you.  I got a couple of front fastening sports bras which are brilliant and I’m never going back to underwired! Look out for the blue wee too! X

  • Also, my lump was1.4 mm at diagnosis but had definitely grown before I had the op which didn’t seem to faze them.  They took a 1 cm margin so I am waiting to see if that’s clear and results of SNLB x

I've ordered some front fastening sports bras. I've always been awkward size so will be trial and error I guess. This might actually end up doing me a favour Wink thank you for the info. Giving rough idea of amount I could be losing. Good luck with your results. I hope you get them soon x

    Hi Diane

Your email is a huge help, thank you. At least I have a rough idea of what may happen. Sorry you didn't get to experience the blue wee. The smallest things make me smile. X
