Hi everyone

really new to this so please bare with me !!
I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer about 6 weeks ago .. my op is next weds where I will also have reconstruction on both breasts … obviously it’s been a whirlwind, but I feel that still I haven’t actually absorbed it all in … am I normal ?? I haven’t cried even … I have lots of support , a great husband and friends … I’m wondering will it all hit me down the line ?? I know everyone is different I read stories on here that are so inspiring… any advice would be appreciated as coming from people actually going through this would help my journey
Thankyou :)

  • Hi Clstar

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer.  It's perfectly normal not to have absorbed it all.  It can be daunting at times particularly when you are first diagnosed as your doctor gives you so much information it can take time for it to sink in.  It may or may not hit you down the line but if it does don't be afraid to reach out.  You'll get plenty of support on here.

Wishing you the best of luck with whatever treatments your medical team put you on.

    Best wishes

  • Thankyou so much xx

  • Welcome. Everyone is different and everyone has a different coping mechanism. Yes news can be distressing and a shock but you have treatment plan and know what is coming up ahead. Such is the time when you need to talk or ask questions, we are here. Try not to compare yourself to others - if this is how you are coping then just keep going - its good you have support too. Good luck x

  • Yes sounds like me. I was chipper and calm for the first few weeks. Had surgery this week - partial mastectomy both sides, plus lymph nodes. Then I got a chest infection and the reality seems to be hitting. I think the numb stage is just survival instinct - you’ve got to stay calm to get treatment so your brain kind of puts you in this altered state. It probably will gradually dawn on you rather than hit you, but you are also stronger than you think. Maybe you’ll do the grieving later when yiur body feels safe again?

  • Thankyou that kinda makes sense … it’s a lot to take in .. I think it will all hit me after surgery … hope you are ok xx
