I've just started chemo following surgery in September. Friends and family have offered their support and kindness by sending lots of flowers but home is different, the flowers are a daily reminder. Some friends have been amazing, some have disappeared. Following diagnosis someone said that I was so lucky because I would get a free breast reconstruction another friend travelled every day for 5 days to help me with my medication.
Hi Hope.67
It’s astonishing how different people’s reactions can be. I think when someone says something really inappropriate it can sometimes be because they are struggling with what to say and don’t think through the impact of what they are saying. Your friend who travelled every day for 5 days sounds like a keeper. I tend to agree too many flowers is a problem. After one hospital stay my home looked more like the display in the local flower shop than my home - plus I really didn’t want to be bothered with caring for them. The ghosting is a common problem too.
Welcome to the club you didn’t want to join. It’s useful in helping to weed out helpful people from unhelpful ones, if nothing else. Wishing you all the best for your chemo.
