Terrible Heartburn

8 days post EC chemo 1st round and have never suffered heartburn before in my life! It’s killing me! Gaviscon not touching it. Omeprazole neither. Any suggestions or similar experience welcome. It’s only at night

  • Hi  so sorry you are going through this.  You say it's only at night so I wondered if it only happens when you are lying down to sleep. This is probably stating the obvious but if it is then could you try sleeping propped up or sitting on a sofa propped up with lots of pillows?  Those V shaped pillows are great for this if you happen to have one.

I would get in touch with your chemotherapy team as there are so many medicines to manage the side effects of chemo that they might have something they can give you that will help.

Hope you find a solution for it as it sounds awful.

  • Ask oncologist or GP for omeprazole or similar medicine that inhibits gastric acid production. It works like magic. BC chemo nurse said to take it every day on chemo.

    Good luck with this

  • Thank you - it’s actually from teatime on. Am getting a script for Omeprazole and have taken 1 this am so here goes. Thank you for taking the time to reply x

  • Hope it works .  Let us know if it does as it can be helpful to others to know this.  It certainly seems to have helped WallyDug. X

  •  my mum was prescribed Lansoprazole for heartburn when she was on EC. One tablet worked within minutes, she experienced heartburn at night too.

  • Hi Jacquie B I had the same from the EC. I’ve never experienced it before either so quite a shock and was much worse at night. The omeprazole really helped me and lying a little propped up. It did ease a little after the first week of chemo but make sure you tell them at your oncology appointment as well so they can help you manage it. Luckily the docetaxel I went onto for the last 3 chemos hasnt been quite so bad for heartburn -  if that’s any help xx
