Hi there

I had a mastectomy 10 weeks ago with a saline reconstruction with bovine mesh at the same time - I have been attending a wound clinic since as there is a problem with the wound healing.  On attending last Thursday I was advised that things with the healing were not progressing,  The consultant took a look and said if I was patient it would probably heal.  I spoke with the nurse afterwards and she said that it may take another one or two months for the wound to heal, and that there was no guarantee that it would,  The options I have been given are wait it out, trimming and re-suturing (definite no) or remove the implant, commence with the radiotherapy (which is being postponed because of the wound) and come back to reconstruction at a later date.  Has anyone else encountered this situation?  I'm a bit shell shocked to be honest - Thanks xxxx

  • Hi ,  sorry to hear about what you are going through.  I haven't been through similar to you but as no one has replied to you I wanted to try and offer you some encouragement.  The main thing is that the cancer is out and the rest will eventually get sorted.  Wounds heal differently for people and although you are having trouble healing it's good they have some options for you.

If I was you I would probably wait the couple of months to see if it does heal and if not then at least you have the option of removing the implant and coming back to reconstruction another time.

Try and stay focused on the fact the cancer has been removed.

Wishing you all the best with your healing x
