Mastectomy after Lumpectomies

Diagnosed end March with invasive lobular grade 2 carcinoma.  MRI led biopsy showed two cancers right breast,  one 15mm and one 5mm, so had two lumpectomies end May.  Pathology showed one cancer 45mm other 21mm.  Shocked.  Three margins not clear on larger cancer.  50% chance of re-excision being successful, so mastectomy next week.  Not coping well.  Very anxious.  Age 77.  Supportive husband and family. Any advice?

Hi Loftus welcome to the forum and so very sorry to hear about what has been happening for you and your family.

It sounds like you have been through the mill and not out of the woods as yet. It is a difficult thing to happen for you but I think what they are saying is that they may get clear margins this time or they may not and that would mean that you have a further surgery and still need a Mastectomy. It also sounds as if they were to do a Lumpectomy and get clear margins they would have to take so much breast tissue that yo would be left with no breast there. Its not an easy decision for any of you and little wonder that you are anxious and in shock things move so quickly but it is doable and you will come through this and out the other side.

We are here for you anytime that you want to chat or ask any questions and we will be with you every step of the way so do keep in touch and let us know how yo are doing as we will be thinking of you.

  • Thank you for your reply.  Yes, that is exactly what they are saying, and why I have decided to have a mastectomy. Your positivity is appreciated.

  • Hi

I had a 6 cm lump in left breast and had to make the difficult decision to have a lumpectomy or directly a mastectomy. This was January 20 after having 4 months of chemo. I opted for the lumpectomy but they didn’t get clear margins so I had to have a mastectomy in March. I was so scared of the first surgery but it was easier than I expected. So I found the mastectomy ok and found the recovery for the mastectomy was much the same as the lumpectomy so try not to worry. The way I looked at it was that taking away the breast saved my life so just had to accept it.
Just take one day at a time and take it easy. Like me it helps if you have a supportive family so am sure they are more than happy to cook and clean for you. My biggest advice is to keep doing the exercises after op to ensure you keep your arm movement. Otherwise a v pillow to help you sleep, comforting nutritious food and drink lots. Also front fastening shirts and pjs for first few days so you don’t have to lift your arm and comfy supportive front fastening bras. I got basic ones at Asda to start me off and now I have a prosthesis I order prettier bras online from Nicola Jane and Amoena. You can look up the catalogues.
    Sending love and best wishes.

  • Thank you so much Jojodot.  Your message is so helpful as your situation is very similar to mine.  I know everyone is different, but it is reassuring to know that you found the recovery from the mastectomy was much the same as the lumpectomy.  I have recovered well from my lumpectomies, apart from seromas from lymph node biopsy.  I have done my exercises this time and will again.  I realise how important they are.  Thank you for your advice re clothing, eating and drinking.  Very grateful.  I hope you are feeling well now.

    Thank you. X
