Depression and fear

Hi I'm really struggling with panic attacks at the moment. I'm newly diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer and get my treatment plan next week. The anxiety and panic attacks are getting worse. I don't know how to deal with it. I'm absolutely terrified all the time

  • Hi  I am so sorry you are going through this but at least you’ve find this site.  The stage you are at at the moment is the worst part of the whole journey.  We all go through it and find it really tough to deal with but then when we get our treatment plan we feel better.  Breast cancer is very treatable this day with a very high success rate so there is no need to panic, this is not a death sentence.  It won’t necessarily be an easy journey but you can do it and you will get through it.

There is a thread called Awake if you find you are panicking late at night - there is often someone on that thread at all hours so post there if you need to and if someone is on they will reply to you.  I’ll send you the link in a moment.

Wishing you all the best xx

  • Hi Gez60

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you’ve been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. It’s understandable that you are feeling scared all the time, being told you have breast cancer is scary. While it’s easy for me to say Breast Cancer is very treatable these days particularly as your cancer has been caught early.

I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer last September and after 8 rounds of chemo and surgery I am now cancer free. It wasn’t an easy journey at times but it was doable.

There is plenty of support out there and if you ring the Macmillan help line they’ll no doubt be able to reassure you.

Wishing you the best of luck with whatever treatments your medical team will decide to give you.  You will get through it even though it doesn’t feel like that right now.

    Best wishes

  • You are very welcome .  There are lots of positive stories on here, just click on peoples names and if they've posted their story you will be able to read it.  Reading all the positive stories and the Awake thread is what got me through the fear and panic. xx

    Please phone the Macmillan helpline - 0808 808 00 00.

They're there 8am - 8pm and you'll be able to discuss you worries etc with them.  They're there for support, just like you sound like you are needing.

You'll get through all of this.  The worst time is waiting to hear what the consultant says and what your treatment plan will be.  The staff will help you through it all and are there to answer all your questions, as well as the people on this forum.  We've all been through it, one way or another, with / without other things going on in the background to, so you'll get a lot of understanding and empathy.

Feel free to say, on here, anything you want to say, even if it's a rant ;)  No one is here to judge, particularly as we are / have been in the (same) similar boat too.

The website for McMillan support is https://www.macmillan.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns/get-support

Also, may be worth talking to your / a GP so, at least, they know of your anxiety.  They may not have time to discuss all your issues but they can prescribe, should you need anything.

    Good luck
