Hi

I'm new here, and have just been diagnosed with high grade DCIS... I had 3 biopsies on my left breast, there is lots of macrocalcification, too much to take out so the surgeon has suggested a masectomy...   I'm so confused if this is non invasive and in the duct only, and cant move out of the breast, why do I require such radical surgery?  It seems very aggressive treatment when no one can tell me if it will spread.

Anyone out there with any advice?

Many Thanks

Hi Pure welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about what is happening for you. Apart form the already known are of DCIS there does sound like there are large areas of microcalcifications and these could cause you problems in the future if not already.

Is it possible to have a chat with the surgeon and ask them why they have opted for a Mastectomy and is there any other way to save you breast at all. I imagine one of the issues is if there is such a large area affected then how much breast tissue would you be left with after removal of all of that area and how would you feel about that.

it is not an easy thing for you to choose and think about and thats why I am wondering if it is worth asking to speak to the surgeon again now that you have had time to think about this and ask them the questions  to enable you to then make an informed choice. I am sure this would be something that the surgeon would be happy to speak with you about.
