Reconstruction decisions....

Hi everyone - I'm new here but after a bit of help...

I was diagnosed in December 2018 and had a right side mastectomy. I've now got to the point of thinking about reconstruction and after seeing my consultant on and off for a long time, it's time for me to make my decision!

Thoughts are for me to have an LD flap reconstruction on mastectomy side and I would like the left side removing ( as a risk reduction measure) and putting back together by an implant (suggestion that I would have an implant on my LD side as well as I don't have enough fat to build a new boob).

I was wondering if anyone has had both sides reconstructed at the same time? I would really like both done in one op and my consultant ahs said she will, but I know it's going to be horribly hard in terms of recovery. If anyone has had experience of this and is happy to share with me I would love to chat.

Thank you!

:)

  • Hi

Making any type of treatment decision is always hard.

I don't have the right experience to share with you but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. This is probably because this is such an active group that your post has slipped off the first page before the person with the right experience has seen it. Replying to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list.

While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

All the best with whatever you decide to do

  • Please let us know how you get on. It's interesting. I wanted a double mastectomy but they wouldnt remove a healthy breast and I was told it makes no difference re risk reducing. Each hospital is different I guess. Good luck x

Thanks so much. Yeah I've been told it makes no difference to life expectancy. For me, it's an anxiety thing but also from a cosmetic point of view.. I feel like having only one as a reconstructed breast will make me feel strange :/

  • I can totally relate to that and I know it's a cliche but the recon they do on one side even is really good. It's a shame I went for the implant with delayed recon as I'm happy with it. You would never know x
