Hi guys,

I was referred to a clinic after finding a lump in my breast. My GP Letter says 2WW-4a-4b-4c-4d- CANCER suspected. What does this mean I've looked around and I've seen that someone's said that it means urgent referral and the 4a-d means that the doctor is concerned and that i should have a biopsy. Does anyone know if that is correct as nobody has really told me anything. I'm only 20 years old and I feel like I'm going to the worst scenario but after I found that i got quite nervous as it would be nice to know if I'll end up with a biopsy. I'm away at uni and I'm not sure how or if to tell my mum to come with me there s no point if it's going to be just a scan but if I could get a biopsy I want her there.

  • Please don’t panic. An urgent referral of 14 days is standard for any lump. I had one that they thought was a cyst and even the consultant after my initial exam at the clinic (within the 14 day) thought it was a cyst. They’ll give you a mammo and likely an ultrasound before they make any decision on a biopsy. If they do need to do one, it is just a needle while you are there. Even a core biopsy doesn’t hurt and will be done in a few minutes. Don’t look at Google to try and understand. There are more badly informed sites than good. Stick to Macmillan, Breast Cancer UK and NHS sites. I know it hard, possibly harder than anything you’ve ever done, but you need to tell someone close to you, for support. Also, it might be worth contacting the hospital and saying you will take a cancellation at short notice. Phone them every day! I phoned every 2 hours for two days. On the third day, they said come tomorrow Joy. The waiting and worrying is harder than anything else. Good luck and keep coming onto this site. It kept me sane through my treatment. Xxx

None of us wanted to be in this group, but we are glad we're not alone.

Diagnosis 2/8/17 IDC Her2+, 22mm, with spread to several lymph nodes. TCHP chemo started 23/8/17, Mx with immediate, temp recon 24/1/18, rads 20/3 to 10/4/18, Herceptin by IV until Nov 18. RR Mx Jan 23. Still waiting for reconstruction, but opting for simple implants, as opposed to Diep, due to long waiting lists for diep.

I really hope so I found the info on here so that's what I'm worried about that it tends to be more reliable then Google Grimacing my boyfriend knows who I live with but there is nothing like your mum lol I've attached a screenshot of what was said on here, ps ringing for a cancellation is a great idea thank you xx

  • Hi

What your GP has written is just standard text so that the hospital know what you have been referred for. GP’s have no way of knowing what is or isn’t cancer , so they have to follow the guidelines for anything that “might” be suspicious. 9 out of 10 referrals are not cancerous, and given your age it is unlikely but your GP has done the best thing and sent you for further tests. Some women just grow lots of lumps and cysts throughout their lives (my sister-in-law being one of them) which are never cancerous , but all need checking.
Until you get your appointment and are seen it will be really difficult, but hopefully you won’t have to wait too long.

  • Awh bless you .  Please tell your mum; she'd want to know. Your GP has done the right thing in referring you and to get a speedy referral they have given an urgent reason as you could wait months.  I had urgent referral age 40 for lump in my armpit that was nothing .  Eventually diagnosed age 51 after routine screening - I had no lump !

Given your age the odds are in your favour but tell your mum and take her with you xx
