I have had three rounds of surgery in order to get a clear margin. Having healed well I am starting radiotherapy on the 20th May. I totally understand the need for radiotherapy and what it does. My doubts, at the moment, are about the pros and cons of taking anastrozole. Has anyone on here or anyone know of someone who has refused to take it?
Hi Fowlec80, welcome to the group, but so sorry you find yourself here. I am on anastrozole, and have been for 5 years. Mine is not for breast cancer though, it is for endometrial stromal sarcoma, which is hormone dependent and now in my lungs.
I can understand that you are worried about taking it. There can be some horrid side effects with it. Some people can take it though with no side effects at all. I do know of some ladies that have stopped taking either letrozole or anastrozole due to the side effects, but some people have found changing brands can alleviate the effects. My sister was on letrozole after having breast cancer surgery, and her side effects were quite severe. so she spoke to her oncologist, who agreed she could stop it, as in her case the percentage of it having any benefits were low.
It is a hard decision to make, but I guess you won't know how you will get on with them until you try.
Wishing you all the best with the radiotherapy. Take care.
Hi I don't know anything about anastrozole but as nobody had responded to you I though I would.
My views on taking any of these meds (I'm on tamoxifen) is to take it and if you don't get side effects then brilliant and if you do and they are intolerable to you then you can always stop taking them - although always discuss with your oncologist.
Personally I don't like taking any form of medication (even paracetamol) but I dislike cancer even more and want to know I have done everything I can to maximise the chances of it not re-occurring.
Hope this helps.
Wishing you all the best with whatever you decide x
Hi Fowlec80, I am taking Anastrozole and have been for 3 weeks now. I have had no side effects. Though, perhaps, a small amount of hot flushes the first night or two but that could have been stress. I decided not to read the info about it as I am a hypochondriac (!) and will get every bad thing they have thought of. So I just tell my partner (the deal is that he can read all the notes) and if he thinks it is of concern, I will tell the medics about it.
Basically, I feel absolutely fine on it. Perhaps I should read the notes but, just now, I want to take every precaution necessary to slow things down before my next operation in June.
All the best, xx
