One month after diagnosis

Hi everyone. Well it’s been a month after my diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma after a routine mammogram. I’ve had surgery to remove the lump and two lymph nodes and the results have come back with clear margins and no trace in the lymph nodes, which is the best result. I now have to have radio therapy and hormone drugs for the next 5 years. I am still feeling really emotional and scared and worried that every pain I feel is cancer related. Just wanted to join this group to discuss with people who are going through the same thing xx

  • Hi OftenknownasBenie

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I’m glad for you that it hasn’t spread.

I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in September and after 8 sessions I also had surgery to remove the lump and two lymph nodes. Unfortunately unlike you there was still some cancer in one of the lymph nodes so I have to have a further course of Chemo this time in tablet form and radiotherapy.

Do you know when you are starting it, I’m starting mine next Wednesday?

It’s perfectly understandable to be feeling emotional about it all and worrying that every pain you feel is cancer related. Don’t be afraid to cry or get angry that you have to go through this.

There will be bad days but there will also be good days as well. There is plenty of support out there if you need it.

Best of luck with your radiotherapy.

    Best wishes

    Hi

Thanks for your reply. Good to hear from you. I am seeing the oncologist on 19th so anytime after then. I hope your radio therapy goes well.  I’m not too worried about it

My cancer was ER/PR+ HER negative. So I will have to probably be on Tamoxifen afterwards, which I have read good and bad reviews for. I am also trying to eat as healthy as possible and avoid sugar and stick to mainly organic where possible.

There is so much information out there and at times it’s mind boggling!! I did have a good cry this morning and my husband is amazing, very supportive, but it is lovely to be able to chat with someone who knows what you’re going through.

Did you suffer much pain in your underarm from the lymph node removal? Mine is still quite painful and super sensitive.

    Best wishes

  • Hi again

I didn’t have too much pain in my underarm form the node removal. The hospital where I had my operation gave me a prescription for painkillers before I left so I took them whenever I was in pain and I found that they helped. I have very supportive friends and family but like you I find it’s lovely to be able to chat with someone that knows what you are going through.

  • Hi - Well done. I'm due to have similar soon. Same problem as you but both breasts. Was the surgery painful ?

  • Hi Venicelagoon

Sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with Cancer in both Breasts.  I didn’t find it  too painful after my surgery. I was given a prescription for two different types of painkiller which I used whenever I felt any pain.

Best of luck with your surgery.

  • Thank you so much. I have a pre-op assessment tomorrow. Think I will ask about painkillers. Not sure that paracetamol will do the trick.

  • Hi  I had the same surgery and outcome as you in January (left breast and 4 nodes removed all clear and clear margins).

I finished radiotherapy a couple of months ago (had the 5 day intensive one) with no issues other than tiredness which I am now recovered from.

Started Tamoxifen after radiotherapy finished and have been taking it for about 7/8 weeks (not really keeping count) and I have had no side effects so try not to worry and wait and see what happens.  Hope you have no side effects either.

Wishing you all the best with radiotherapy x

    Hi

Lovely to hear from you. I am seeing my Oncologist on Wednesday, but my surgeon also mentioned having 5 days intensive radio therapy.

So glad to hear yours went well and that Tamoxifen is working well with you. I do think that it is different for everyone, and just as everyone’s cancer is unique to them, so is how they respond to treatment.

Wishing you continued success with your treatment and future health.

    xx

  • Thank you .  Wishing the same to you too.  Hope you get the 5 day radiotherapy as it's great to get it done and out of the way in just one week.  xx
