Hi, I'm Jo and I found a large lump in my right breast about 5 weeks ago.

I've had a core biopsy and been told it's cancer and I am booked for an operation on 21st May.  I'm going to have a "wide cut incision, the lump removed and at least one lymph node removed. Then coming home the next day!  I live on my own in a rural place with only two neighbours that I see occasionally ( if we are in the garden) no friends really but an ex partner who is 78, can't drive anymore and can't see very well so cannot be very helpful. He comes round once a week.

I am worried about being able to cook, keep the laundry under control, clean and light the fire if it's a cold day etc etc. I am 70. I have no central heating just this damn stove which eats coal and wood, both heavy!

I don't think I need chemotherapy but will have radiotherapy. I think/hope I can get transport for this. There's no shops here but I have noticed some delivery slots on tescos now that the lock down has eased.

These worries are apart from the actual cancer worries. I am on Pension Credit so can't afford a cleaner or gardener.

Any ideas very welcome! Thank you

    Oh bless you, Jo, aka

So sorry to hear all this.  Yes, it's enough having the diagnosis, without having the worries of managing day to day tasks.

Always remember, you're not alone  Wink

A fantastic resource is MacMillan.  They are there to support us, in whatever way they can.  They can advise re benefits that you may now be entitled to, help/advise re transport, councelling, alternative therapies ie acupuncture etc, and more ......

    Their website address is https://www.macmillan.org.uk/

I would urge you to phone them on Monday and get a contact with someone established who will help and advise you - phone  0808 808 00 00

I had similar concerns.  I live alone, also 70 yrs, so I worried I'd have problems but, in fact, came from hospital after overnight stay (having had Wide local excision and Sentinal LN Biopsy) and had a 'pancake party' arranged so I was whisking up the ingredients, with hand whisk - same side as operation  LOL  Absolutely no problem, most action coming from wrist / lower arm, in fact, hence the ability.  Filling kettle, for instance, just fill jug and take to fill kettle etc.  There're often ways around.

Hopefully this will help to reassure you, at least to some extent.  {{{Hugs}}}  Hugging

  • Hi Jo

Sorry to hear that you have Breast Cancer.  One way of getting round the problem of being able to cook after your op is to cook up some meals before you have the operation and freeze them that way you'll have a ready supply of dinners to see you through.  Hope this helps.
