Hi,

I have one cycle left of docetaxol....so glad as this last one has been a tough one both physically and emotionally.

Amazingly, I still have some hair left. Not enough to go out without a wig but can stick a beanie hat on in the house and feel hair around my ears.

I know there is no miracle cure to promote rapid hair growth, but wondered of anyone has used specific shampoo/conditioner that has given that's extra strength whilst it is growing.

If anyone has anything they can share that would be great.

Thanks

Del x

  • Hi Delh welcome to the forum and glad to hear that things are nearly completed fr you.

I recognise that our hair is an important part of us and who we are but it is also an area often overlooked that is affected by treatment and leaves our scalp super sensitive. The main reason I am saying that is to say that I wouldn't be trying anything that is highly perfumed or has lots of chemicals in it as this will irritate your scalp . Maybe something like baby shampoo or simple shampoo as these are both gentle but with no chemicals.

  • Hi welcome glad to hear you nearly thru chemo . Read my profile if you want but I had EC x6 .

We're all different in how we react so I can only say what my experience was . I agree with whatever you decide to use make sure it's 0% parabens .

My hairdresser recommended Nioxin shampoo and conditioner it's for thinning hair and strengthens root follicles..

I finished chemo Dec 2019  I did not use cold cap ,just before last one hairdresser shaved my head for first time ( no 2 cut ) so new growth would grow to shape .

This worked well for me in March 2020 I was shielded ( still on herceptin ) . My head was covered in a soft fuzz Joy by July when I could go out I needed a cut . Then was trimmed every four weeks til Oct . Desperate for cut by April RoflJoy

It came back same colour gun metal grey but curly now back to being thick with more like a wave .

I only washed when it was needed so not two three or more times a week . Also used Aqueous cream very cheap for big tub boots etc . to keep scalp moisturised massaged into scalp and then used before shampoo .

I bought my Nioxin from Groupon but it can be bought on Amazon etc also from hairdressing wholesalers .

    march2020

March 2021trimmed every four weeks while hair got stronger

Obviously I don't know if hair would have achieved same with other product

    Good luck

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

    Hi Granny 59,

Just a quick Thank You for your good tip ! So far I've avoided hairloss, having opted for the Cold Cap. It's very unpleasant but I'm happy to have stuck with it. Don't want to jeopardize the success with harsh shampoo.

    Best wishes Heart exclamation️xxx

  • My sister in law swore by Lush cinnamon shampoo bar but from Lush shops or online Heart️

  • Good morning.....

I agree with Northerner.....the important thing is 0% parabens which are harsh on any hair but especially new growth. You no longer have to pay high prices.....back in 2015 most everyday brands still contained them but now many easily affordable names...Timotei, Garnier, Dove, .....are paraben free.

At my unit we had a beautician who came around during the chemo session to advise on nails and hair. She didn't recommend baby shampoo although you will find, because we are all different, there will be contributors who swear by it. Her reason was that it contains something for new born baby scalps which is less suitable for chemo stripped heads. She advised regularly rubbing an oil into the scalp...argan or almond were her favourites. She said rub it in at night, put on a cap to protect the pillow and shower it off with a soft shampoo in the morning. I found Timotei do a Pure shampoo.  I still use it although these days , in an effort to reduce plastic bottles I also use a bar shampoo from the organic shop.

I hope your last taxotere goes well. I had problems with it so I know how physically unwell it can make you feel. As you have already had some problems make sure you keep in touch with your BCN or oncology this time if you get the beginnings of burning skin or peeling on your hands or feet. You won't be making a fuss just taking a careful precaution.

    Thinking of you.

    Love Karen

Morning all, I agree with  my friend recommended’lush shampoo bar, it’s called ‘New’ and does something to your hair follicles that stimulates new growth. I used the cold cap with some success, however lost some hair around my ears and neck. I starting using this shampoo in feb and now have full coverage. Just need to work on the length now as I look like I have had a buzz cut round the sides . Good luck xxxxx

Lovely to hear you still have hair.  I used to use Simple shampoo as my scalp was so sensitive and when there was more coverage use to apply a small amount of count oil ( bought in supermarket or health stores in solid form in a jar) which seemed to help, it helps to promote healthy hair
