Hi,

I had my biopsy results on Thursday and I am feeling so calm.

I am a busy mum of four wonderful sons, with I a very supportive husband. They are my whole world, my boys are between 9 and 15 and I have been open with them since getting the results of the imaging two weeks ago.

I found a walnut sized lump in my breast on Easter Saturday. I am 38 and I have no indications that I could have cancer. However my GP took me seriously and after my description on a telephone call while I was in Waitrose, she referred me to the breast clinic. 8 days later on the 15th April I attended the clinic and got sent for ultrasound and then mammogram and finally biopsies.  I was told that the imaging indicated cancer, (m5 and u5) but I had to wait for the biopsy results for confirmation.

I have spent the last two weeks telling everyone who asked how I was that I have breast cancer. It has been cathartic, sharing with everyone.

I was worried before the appointment this week that it might have spread, so it was a huge relief that the biopsy on the lymph nodes were clear.

Sorry for waffling on, I am an oversharer, and generally organise my thoughts by talking them out.

  • Hi Baroness

welcome to the club no one wants to join! You’ll find lots of support here Slight smile

like you, I was calm about it all and quite happy to tell people. That isn’t how everyone likes to deal with it, but obviously right for  you and me at least! I know the relief about the nodes though - I had to wait until I got the results of the node biopsy carried out at the same time as my lumpectomy to know for sure (I’d been told on the ultrasound they looked clear but ....!)

Do you know what type you have and what your proposed treatment plan is yet? X

  • Hi, thanks for replying

    It's a 3cm grade 3 tumour that's oestrogen negative but her2 positive.

I will be starting with 6 cycles of chemo and a year of trastuzumab and pertuzumab. Then surgery and then radiotherapy.

    What about you?

  • Grade 3 3cm funnily enough, but ER/PR+ and HER- in my case. Had 2 surgeries, July & August 2020 (margins not clear first time round) and 15 sessions of radiotherapy in October. Because of my age (49) and Oncotype score (21 so intermediate for risk of reoccurrence), I’m on monthly Goserelin implants to put me in menopause, daily Letrozole and six- monthly bisphosphonate infusions for 5 years

You’ve got a harder treatment route than me but hopefully once you’ve gone through it all , you can have a new start at 40 x

  • Hi,  good to meet you, I'm 2 cycles into chemo for a grade 3, 56mm lump and I'm also hormone positive, so have the luxury of a 4 drug (TCHP) cocktail with 4 more cycles to go, then surgery and radiotherapy and a further 12 cycles of hormones though I’m struggling to think that for ahead.   I’ve also been very open with family, friends and colleagues as I know I get energy from other people and I value the support.  The good news is that my MRI this week shows the lump has reduced now to only 11cm!

    Hope you are doing ok

  • Hi Baroness L

I am also hormone receptor negative and HER2 pos which I took quite hard initially however the 2 targeted drugs are getting excellant results and feel very hopeful now re the future.

Ive just had my 6th chemo round 12 days ago and just starting to come round from that.  Radiotherapy assessment later today then 2 weeks of it in a few weeks time.  I will continue the targeted drugs for one year.  If you click on my profile it shows ive had 2 ops already (not clear margins first time) and although in the early days it felt the jouney seems so long time really helps as you access support along the way and learn what helps to keep you distracted.

Wishing you all the best in these early days as having breast cancer is so difficult to process ( was/is for me, not sure i have properly!!!) big hugs xx

  • Hi Carlo41,

Thanks for replying, that was interesting to read your profile. Well done for insisting on the mammogram, sometimes we just know something isn't right in our bodies.

    How has the chemo been?

Have you had to completely isolate?

The thing I'm dreading the most is everything I'm going to miss out on over the next year etc.

  • Hi Irishgirl,

That's fantastic news that your tumour has responded so well.

How have the side effects been?

  • One day of nasty sickness in each cycle so far and other than that quite manageable, thank you for asking. I get the sore mouth, weird taste, and the strange mix of constipation and diarrhoea, but I can deal with all of this.  I had awful heartburn at first, but Omeprazole has dealt with that. And my hair has fallen out, but I am really enjoying my wig.  I am managing to keep working, though I do work from home and can be very flexible, so all in all, though nothing to compare it to, I would say ok.  Cycle 3 on Thursday!

  • That sounds really positive, and manageable.

I just scared myself by reading a little bit of the April /May chemo thread. Sounded terrifying, and completely overwhelming. I am fit and active at the moment, and it's weird to think I have to get sick to get better.

  • I know exactly what you mean, after my first call with the oncologist I came away more scared if chemo than cancer!   From what I have read, it helps if you are fit and active and I am trying to continue to exercise through as I believe this helps.   When do you start chemo? Good luck
