Hi Everyone.   I went for my annual health assessment last week and have been called back post a mammogram as evidence of calcification and tissue thickening in one of my breasts.  I have an appointment next Thursday but I am terrified as mum died of breast cancer. How do you stop the negative thoughts and anxiety.  I am 51 and this is my second mammogram plus I’m on HRT so now wondering if I should stop that but I am a wreck without it.

Hi LunaW welcome to the forum and I am so sorry to hear how things are for you right now. This could yet turn out to be something that is not Cancer and can be monitored for any changes. It is good that  they have picked this up for you and are seeing you quickly that's good news even though it may not feel like that.

The trick is to keep your self super busy and then you dont have time to think about it  all but it never really goes away.

Im not sure about the HRT one as I was stopped taking any hormone treatment right from the start and just to give you a heads up that coming off this may well be in the mix, dependant on what any future biopsies taken show up. just to prepare you because they may say stop and it is not an optional one unfortunately.

Sorry not to be more positive but don't want to tell you false info either.

  • Hi @LunaW and so sorry you find yourself in this situation.  As GRANNY59 said this might not be cancer but even if it is please try to remember that breast cancer is very treatable these days and the vast majority of us go on to live cancer free lives but you just don't here from these ladies as they are off living their lives.  This is what my breast care nurse told me.

You Arte at the hardest part at the moment, the waiting for results is awful but you will get through it.  Best thing to do is try and keep yourself busy.

Re HRT, if it is cancer and hormone receptive I imagine you would have to stop HRT.  I'm your age and the first thing I was asked was if I was on HRT (I wasn't so don't know what they would have told me to do).  Make sure you tell your doctors you are on HRT if they don't ask and they will tell you what you should do but as GRANNY59 said, be prepared to be asked to stop.

Really hope this turns out to be non cancerous.  Wishing you all the best x

  • Thank you fingers are crossed. Iv done lots of reading so feel more prepared. Fingers and toes are crossed.  Hope you are doing well?

  • Not long now before your Thursday appointment so hopefully you have been managing to keep yourself busy and not dwell on this too much.  Do you know what tests you are going back for?  They might re do the mammogram which is what they did with me and then after that was still inconclusive I saw a radiologist at which point he decided a biopsy was needed.  They numbed the area first and I found the biopsy completely painless so don't worry if they suggest a biopsy.

I'm done with treatment now and doing very well thank you.  You can read my and other peoples stories (if they've posted them) by clicking on our names.  so you can click on my name where it appears above this message I have just written.

Let us know how you get on on Thursday and hopefully it was all a fuss about nothing. x
