Evening all.

Just before I was told about having chemo, I bought supplements that apparently help with skin, nail and hair condition....talk about jinxing myself!!! They just include vitamin c, collagen, buckthorn powder and pine bark (have no idea what those last 2 are if I'm honest lol)

Do you think I should start taking them no or wait until I have finished chemo?

Still gutted that they won't let me use cold cap because of covid and will be even more frustrated when I am half way through and they will then start using it again.

I know these will not be miracle workers but maybe might help in dealing with bad skin etc. Just don't want to start and then get reaction if that makes sense.

Thanks x

  • Hi

Someone on another post mentioned a similar thing earlier today - before you take anything you must speak to your oncologist, mine told me to take nothing except vitamin d, just because things seem natural doesn’t mean they won’t have side effects and/ or interfere with the drugs you have whilst having chemo. There is a website https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/pine-bark-extract where some of the more common alternative medicines are listed, worth a look too.

    Good luck with your treatment

Thanks Jo. Thought it might be not recommended. Will hang fire on taking them x

  • Hi Delh,

I told my BC nurse what supplements I had started taking. I was told to stop taking  Turmeric supplements as they are highly concentrated and can interfere with chemo. I can still take it in food. It’s still OK for me to take Vitamin D3.

I’ve changed my diet (a bit) and am now eating more veg, fruit, nuts and whole grain pasta, brown rice etc. Yes, a bit hippyish! Going for lower GI. I think you’re better off getting your vitamins through food if possible.

I would definitely tell them what you are taking,

    All the best
